We are seeking a Senior DevOps / Platform Engineer to design, deploy, and operate mission-critical infrastructure in fully airgapped and classified environments. This role requires deep expertise in bare-metal Kubernetes, offline CI/CD pipelines, and self-hosted observability at scale. The ideal candidate has a proven track record building zero-external-dependency architectures and reducing deployment complexity while maintaining strict security and compliance standards.
Core Competencies
- Deep VMware vSphere expertise (ESXi, vCenter, NSX-T)
- Proxmox / KVM for cost-sensitive or classified deployments
- PXE boot, IPMI / iDRAC, custom ISO pipelines for bare-metal provisioning
- Hands-on hardware knowledge: firmware, BIOS/UEFI, hardware RAID, NIC teaming
- Kubernetes (vanilla, RKE2, or OpenShift) deployed and maintained without internet connectivity
- Container image lifecycle: internal registries (Harbor), vulnerability scanning (Trivy / Clair), image signing (Cosign / Notary), airgap tar transfers
- Ansible (complex playbooks, custom modules, AWX / Tower)
- Terraform with local backends (MinIO S3-compatible, PostgreSQL)
- Self-hosted GitLab or Jenkins with strict plugin curation
- Artifact management: Nexus / Artifactory hosting Maven, npm, PyPI, Docker, and RPM mirrors
- Offline build systems, pre-cached dependencies, reproducible builds
- GitOps with ArgoCD or Flux running entirely on-prem
- Python / Go / Bash, building internal tools when no SaaS exists
- RPM / DEB packaging, custom package builds
- Kernel tuning, systemd, cgroups, performance at the OS level
Key Responsibilities
- Architect and operate bare-metal Kubernetes clusters across isolated security zones with zero external dependencies.
- Build and maintain offline software supply chains, including local Harbor registries, Nexus artifact repositories, and curated language mirrors.
- Design and implement PXE-based bare-metal provisioning pipelines to streamline server deployment.
- Lead migrations from monolithic VM infrastructure to contemporary containerized platforms to optimize resource utilization.
- Implement federated Prometheus observability across multiple isolated sites with centralized alerting.
- Harden RHEL and Ubuntu systems to DISA STIG standards and lead security audits.
- Provide technical mentorship to engineering teams regarding airgap-specific constraints and operational best practices.
