A Marine Diesel Engine Service Engineer is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and commissioning marine diesel engines and their related systems, usually on ships, vessels, shipyards, or workshops.

Main Job Roles & Responsibilities

1. Engine Inspection & Maintenance
- Perform routine inspection, servicing, and overhauling of marine diesel engines.
- Inspect cylinder heads, pistons, liners, crankshafts, bearings, fuel pumps, injectors, turbochargers, and valve mechanisms.
- Carry out preventive and corrective maintenance according to manufacturer specifications.
- Measure clearances, wear, alignment, compression, and other critical parameters.

- Troubleshooting & Repair

- Diagnose engine problems such as:
- Excessive exhaust smoke
- High exhaust temperatures
- Low lubrication-oil pressure
- Cooling-water problems
- Starting difficulties
- Excessive vibration
- Abnormal noise
- High fuel consumption

- Identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
- Repair or replace defective components.

- Engine Overhauling

- Dismantle and inspect major engine components.
- Conduct piston, cylinder liner, cylinder head, bearing, fuel-injection equipment, and turbocharger overhauls.
- Check components against manufacturer tolerances.
- Reassemble engines and perform necessary adjustments.

- Commissioning & Testing

- Assist with installation and commissioning of new or overhauled engines.
- Perform trial runs and load tests.
- Check engine parameters such as RPM, temperatures, pressures, fuel consumption, and vibration.
- Prepare commissioning and test reports.

- Fuel & Injection System

- Service fuel pumps, injectors,



fuel valves, and fuel-control systems.
- Check fuel-injection timing and operating condition.
- Troubleshoot fuel-system problems and optimize engine performance.

- Turbocharger & Auxiliary Equipment

- Inspect and service turbochargers.
- Work on charge-air coolers, starting-air systems, cooling-water systems, lubrication systems, and exhaust systems.
- Check air and exhaust gas pressures and temperatures.

- Electrical/Electronic Troubleshooting

- Diagnose basic engine-control and monitoring-system faults.
- Work with sensors, actuators, alarms, and engine control units.
- Coordinate with electrical/electronics engineers for complex control-system issues.

- Service Reports & Documentation

- Prepare detailed service reports after each job.
- Record measurements, replaced parts, defects, and corrective actions.
- Maintain maintenance records and job cards.
- Provide recommendations for future maintenance.

- Customer & Shipboard Support

- Communicate with ship owners, chief engineers, ship managers, and technical superintendents.
- Explain engine defects and recommended repairs.
- Provide technical support during breakdowns and emergencies.
- Travel to vessels, ports, shipyards, and customer sites as required.

- Safety & Compliance

- Follow company, shipyard, and vessel safety procedures.
- Use appropriate PPE and follow permit-to-work/lockout procedures.
- Follow applicable manufacturer, classification, and maritime requirements.
- Maintain a safe working setting during engine maintenance and testing.
- Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) regularly throughout the day.
