Role & responsibilities
Lead product innovation and engineering at CMAC India (www.cmac,co.in) for its range of passenger, material and multifunctional hoists. The Research & Development (R&D;) Head owns the technology roadmap, new product development, design safety and certification, and cost-effective, manufacturable designs. The role protects CMAC's reputation for safe, reliable equipment and builds the technical edge that differentiates it in the construction vertical-transportation market.
Preferred candidate profile
1. Technology Roadmap & Product Strategy
- Define the product and technology roadmap with the Director and Business Development, based on
customer needs, competitor benchmarking and market trends (capacity, speed, height, energy efficiency, smart controls and monitoring).
- Identify new product lines and variants and build business cases covering cost, timelines and expected
returns. 2. New Product Development
- Lead new product development through a stage-gated process: concept, design, prototype, testing, field
trial, and release to production.
- Ensure design calculations, structural and drive-system analysis, and risk assessments are complete and
reviewed before release.
- Deliver projects on time and within budget with explicit milestones and periodic reviews.
3. Design Excellence & Safety
- Oversee design of masts, cabins, rack-and-pinion drives, safety devices, braking systems, landing gates and
electrical / control systems.
- Embed safety by design: overload, overspeed, limit and interlock protections, and fail-safe behaviour.
- Review and approve drawings, BOMs and specifications for accuracy before release.
4. Standards, Testing & Certification
- Ensure designs meet applicable standards (e.g. EN 12159) and statutory and customer requirements.
- Plan and supervise type testing,
load and overload tests, safety-device tests, and third-party approvals;
maintain test records and technical files. 5. Value Engineering & Localisation
- Run value engineering, standardisation and localisation programmes to reduce cost and lead time without
compromising safety or performance.
- Support vendor development for critical components with Purchase and Quality Control
6. Manufacturability & Change Control
- Work with the Factory Head to make designs manufacturable, and support prototypes and first-article builds
on the shop floor.
- Manage engineering change requests, revision control, BOM integrity and design documentation.
7. Field Feedback & Technical Support
- Analyse field failures, service data and customer feedback with After Sales; lead design root-cause analysis
and corrective action.
- Provide technical inputs for proposals, tenders and customer clarifications; support standard manuals,
installation guides and spares catalogues. 8. Team, Budget Knowledge Management
- Build and mentor the design and R&D; team; set KRAs, review performance and plan capability development.
- Manage the R&D; budget, design tools (CAD / FEA / PLM) and test facilities; safeguard intellectual property
and design know-how.
KEY INTERFACES
Internal
Director; Design Head; Factory Head, Production and Quality; Purchase and Stores; After Sales; Sales and Business
Development; Finance & Accounts.
External
Component suppliers and technology partners, certification and testing agencies, consultants, customers on specific technical requirements, and industry bodies.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering (Electrical, Mechatronics or Production acceptable); M.Tech
preferred.
- 1215+ years in design and development of hoists, elevators, cranes, heavy machinery or similar lifting
equipment, with at least 5 years leading a design or R&D; team.
- Hands-on experience taking products from concept to production, including testing and certification.
SKILLS &COMPETENCIES;
- Strong grounding in mechanical and structural design, drive and braking systems, and lifting-equipment
safety standards.
- Working knowledge of electrical drives, VFDs, PLC-based controls and sensors; awareness of IoT-based
monitoring.
- Proficiency with CAD, FEA / calculation tools, PLM / BOM systems and DFMEA / risk-assessment methods.
- Analytical, structured problem solver with the ability to balance innovation, cost and safety.
- Leadership, cross-functional collaboration and clear technical communication.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS Key Performance Indicator How it is measured
New product development delivery % milestones met on time and within budget
Certification and testing Approvals and type tests completed as per plan
Design-related field failures Number attributable to design, per 100 units
Cost reduction Annualised savings from value engineering and localisation
Release quality Drawing / BOM error rate; engineering change turnaround time
Innovation impact % of revenue from new or upgraded products
R&D; budget Actual vs approved budget
Team capability Training hours, skill-matrix coverage, attrition
