ENGINEER – TOOL ROOM

Department: Tool Room | Reporting to: Tool Room Head

Role purpose

Assist the Tool Room Head in executing new-tool development, assembly, trials, maintenance and improvements for press tools, moulds, assembly tools, jigs, fixtures and quality gauges. Coordinate daily work, resolve tooling complaints, maintain Tool Room discipline and inventory, and report measurable delivery and performance results. Work from approved drawings; tool design and design changes remain with the Design Department.

Key responsibilities

- Daily execution and new-tool development: Translate the Head’s priorities into daily job allocation and follow-up. Assist in preparing and tracking component-wise process routes, machining, heat treatment, outside processing, inspection, fitting and assembly against committed dates. Escalate delays and resource constraints.
- Tool breakdown complaints: Register each complaint with tool ID, machine/line, fault and reporting time. Assess urgency with Production and the Head, coordinate diagnosis and repair, track downtime, confirm satisfactory operation with Production/Quality and close the complaint with repair details and verification evidence.
- Tool maintenance and CAPA: Execute scheduled preventive maintenance and maintain tool history. Analyse repeat failures, support quality meetings and implement assigned tooling CAPA actions. Coordinate through the Head with the Design Team for replacement-part drawings or approved modifications; verify effectiveness with Quality.
- Discipline and 5S: Maintain designated locations, identification, job status, tool storage, housekeeping and safe working practices. Conduct scheduled 5S checks, assign corrective actions and follow up closure; escalate recurring discipline issues to the Head.
- Autonomous machine maintenance: Ensure operators perform authorised cleaning, lubrication, tightening and inspection checks using machine-specific checklists. Record abnormalities and follow up closure.



Apply prescribed isolation procedures; electrical or specialist repairs are handled by authorised Maintenance personnel.
- Machine breakdown coordination: Raise complaints with Maintenance for Tool Room machine failures, record stoppage and restoration times, follow up repairs and escalate overdue jobs. Coordinate secure return to service and the necessary accuracy/function checks before restarting precision work.
- Inventory control: Maintain receipts, issues, returns, balances and storage identification for tool steels, spares, cutting tools, consumables and bought-out items in ERP. Track job-wise consumption, monitor agreed minimum stock, raise replenishment requests and reconcile monthly physical counts; obtain approval for adjustments and scrap disposal.
- Records and reporting: Maintain current drawings, job cards, inspection and trial records, tool histories, maintenance checklists and complaint logs. Submit the monthly performance report with supporting records, pending actions, owners and due dates.

Technical and behavioural requirements:

- Practical knowledge of press tools, moulds, fitting, assembly, repairs, machining sequences, tool steels and heat treatment; ability to read engineering drawings, tolerances and GD&T.;
- Competence in dimensional inspection and relevant measuring instruments; understanding of root-cause analysis, 5S, autonomous maintenance and applicable automotive quality procedures.
- Ability to coordinate operators, vendors, Production, Quality, Design and Maintenance.
- CAD/CAM or machine operation skills are useful where assigned;
- Experienced in programming CNC milling machines, translating technical blueprints into efficient machine paths using modern CAM software and manual G-code adjustments.

Qualification and experience Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Tool & Die Making or Production Engineering. 3–6 years of hands-on Tool Room experience in automotive or precision manufacturing, including tooling maintenance, troubleshooting and shop-floor coordination.

Salary:

Rs. 22000/- to Rs. 28000/- gross per month.
