Production Chemist Role & Responsibilities

A Production Chemist is responsible for managing and monitoring chemical manufacturing processes to ensure products are made safely, efficiently, consistently, and according to quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

- Operate and monitor chemical production processes, reactors, mixers, centrifuges, filtration systems, dryers, etc.
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), batch manufacturing records, and safety procedures.
- Weigh, dispense, and charge raw materials according to approved formulas and batch instructions.
- Monitor critical process parameters such as temperature, pressure, pH, reaction time, flow rate, and agitation.
- Collect and test in-process samples and coordinate with the Quality Control (QC) laboratory.
- Maintain accurate batch records, logbooks, production reports, and material consumption records.
- Identify process deviations, abnormalities, or equipment problems and report them to supervisors/QA.
- Ensure production activities comply with GMP, EHS, and company safety requirements, where applicable.
- Coordinate with QC, QA, maintenance, warehouse,



and engineering teams to maintain smooth production.
- Ensure proper cleaning of production equipment and prevent cross-contamination.
- Monitor production yield, productivity, and material losses.
- Assist with process optimization, troubleshooting, and scale-up activities.
- Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and production waste.
- Follow PPE and chemical-handling requirements and participate in safety initiatives.
- Support investigations related to batch failures, deviations, OOS results, and process abnormalities.
- Train or guide junior operators/chemists on production procedures when required.

Typical Skills Required

- Knowledge of organic/inorganic chemistry and chemical processing
- Understanding of GMP, GLP, SOPs, and EHS
- Batch manufacturing and documentation skills
- Chemical reaction and process troubleshooting
- Basic analytical techniques and laboratory knowledge
