Role Overview

We are looking for a Senior Backend Developer with deep experience in Java and microservices to build, scale, and operate the backend systems that power Valeo’s healthcare platform across KSA and UAE. You will own services end-to-end — design, build, ship, operate — while mentoring junior engineers and raising the technical bar of the team. This is a senior individual-contributor role focused on technical depth.

You will spend most of your time writing code, designing systems, and reviewing your peers’ work. You will not manage people, but you will mentor 2–3 junior engineers, drive technical standards, and be the senior voice in architecture decisions for your area. It is the right role if you want to grow as an engineer rather than into management.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Ownership

- Design, build, and operate Java-based microservices that handle sensitive healthcare data at scale.




- Own technical design for services in your area — write design docs, lead design reviews, make architecture tradeoffs.
- Maintain high standards for code quality, testing, observability, and operational excellence.
- Debug production issues across services; own root-cause analysis and remediation.
- Drive performance, reliability, and cost improvements in owned services.

Mentorship

- Mentor 2–3 junior backend engineers through pairing, code reviews, and design reviews.
- Run technical brown-bag sessions and learning sessions for the backend team — share patterns, post-mortem learnings, and new tools.
- Help juniors grow toward SDE II and Senior Engineer levels — identify stretch projects, give structured feedback.
- Be the first technical escalation point in your area for less senior engineers.

Collaboration

- Partner with frontend and mobile engineers on API design and contracts.
- Work with Product Managers on solution design and technical tradeoffs.
- Work with DevOps/SRE on infrastructure, deployment, and incident response.
- Participate in hiring — review resumes, conduct technical interviews, calibrate signal.

Security & Compliance

- Ensure code and design decisions meet HIPAA, UAE PDPL, and KSA PDPL requirements for healthcare data handling.
- Implement secure patterns for PII/PHI: encryption at rest and in transit, audit trails, access controls.
- Maintain documentation needed for security audits and reviews.

Required Qualifications

Experience

- 5–7 years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong focus on backend systems.
- 3 years building production systems in Java (Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, or similar frameworks).
- Direct experience designing and operating microservices in production — not just consuming them.
- Demonstrated mentorship experience — you have meaningfully grown more junior engineers, formally or informally.
- Startup experience is a plus — comfort with ambiguity, speed of decision-making, and wearing multiple hats.




- Exposure to healthcare, fintech, or other regulated, high-trust domains is a plus.

Technical Skills

- Strong expertise in Java (8 or later) and the Spring ecosystem (Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Spring Data).
- Solid understanding of microservices architecture patterns — service discovery, API gateways, async messaging, circuit breakers, idempotency.
- Hands-on experience with relational and NoSQL databases (Postgres, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis).
- Experience with message brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ, AWS SQS) and event-driven design.
- Familiarity with AWS or GCP — compute, networking, IAM, and managed services.
- Strong understanding of REST API design; experience with gRPC or GraphQL is a plus.
- Experience with observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, New Relic, or similar).
- Solid grounding in testing — unit, integration, and contract testing.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and containerised deployment (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Understanding of data security, encryption, and PII/PHI handling.

- Crisp communication: you can write a clear technical spec, run a productive design review, and have a hard architectural conversation when needed.

What Success Looks Like (First 12 Months)

- You ship 2–3 significant backend services or major upgrades, owned end to end, with measurable reliability or performance impact.
- Junior engineers you mentor grow visibly — broader scope, harder problems, promotion readiness.
- Production incidents in your area decrease quarter over quarter.
- You become the first person teammates ask when they hit a hard backend or systems question.
- You contribute meaningfully to engineering hiring — both interview throughput and signal quality.
