The OT In-Charge is responsible for the overall coordination, supervision, functioning, safety, cleanliness, infection prevention, staff management, equipment readiness, and operational efficiency of the Operation Theatre.
The OT In-Charge shall ensure that all surgical procedures are conducted safely and efficiently, with proper coordination between surgeons, anaesthetists, nursing staff, technicians, housekeeping staff, and other concerned departments.
A. OT Operations & Coordination
- Manage the day-to-day functioning of the Operation Theatre.
- Prepare and coordinate the OT schedule in consultation with surgeons and hospital administration.
- Ensure that the OT is adequately prepared before every surgical procedure.
- Coordinate with surgeons, anaesthetists, OT staff, ward staff, laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, CSSD and other departments.
- Ensure availability of required instruments, surgical sets, consumables, medicines, linen and equipment before procedures.
- Ensure smooth patient transfer to and from the OT.
- Coordinate emergency and urgent surgical procedures as directed by the authorized medical team.
B. Staff Management
- Supervise OT nurses, technicians, attendants, ward staff and housekeeping personnel assigned to the OT.
- Prepare duty rosters and ensure adequate staffing for scheduled procedures.
- Allocate responsibilities according to staff competency and workload.
- Monitor attendance, punctuality, discipline and qualified conduct.
- Conduct regular briefing and orientation for OT staff.
- Identify training requirements and recommend appropriate training.
- Ensure that staff follow hospital policies, protocols and approved OT procedures.
C. Patient Safety
- Ensure correct patient identification before surgery.
- Verify procedure, surgical site and relevant documentation as per hospital protocol.
- Ensure completion of required pre-operative checks and checklists.
- Ensure proper handover of patients between ward, OT, recovery area and other departments.
- Ensure availability of emergency drugs, resuscitation equipment and other critical supplies.
- Report any patient-safety incident, medication error, retained-item risk, fall,
injury or other adverse event immediately to the appropriate authority.
D. Infection Prevention & Control
- Ensure strict adherence to infection prevention and control practices.
- Monitor hand hygiene and appropriate use of PPE by OT personnel.
- Ensure proper surgical asepsis and sterile technique.
- Ensure appropriate cleaning and disinfection of OT surfaces and equipment.
- Monitor sterilization and sterile supply availability in coordination with CSSD/sterilization services.
- Ensure proper segregation and disposal of biomedical waste according to applicable hospital procedures.
- Monitor environmental cleanliness and ensure that the OT is maintained in an appropriate condition before and after procedures.
E. Surgical Instruments & Equipment
- Ensure readiness and availability of surgical instruments and equipment.
- Verify completeness of instrument and surgical sets before and after procedures.
- Maintain proper records of instruments and equipment.
- Report damaged, missing or malfunctioning equipment immediately.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance and repair of OT equipment with the concerned department.
- Ensure proper handling and storage of instruments and sensitive equipment.
F. Consumables & Stock Management
- Monitor stock levels of surgical consumables, sutures, gloves, gowns, masks, drapes, disinfectants and other OT supplies.
- Maintain minimum and maximum stock levels for critical items.
- Raise purchase/requisition requests in advance to prevent stock-outs.
- Check expiry dates of medicines, consumables and sterile items.
- Ensure proper storage and rotation of OT materials.
- Maintain records of consumption and wastage.
G. OT Documentation & Records
- Maintain OT registers and relevant records.
- Ensure accurate documentation of surgical procedures, staff details, instrument counts and other required information.
- Maintain records of emergency procedures, cancellations, delays and postoperative transfers as applicable.
- Ensure proper completion and filing of OT checklists and registers.
- Maintain records required for internal audits and hospital quality assessments.
H. Surgical Safety & Checklist Compliance
- Ensure compliance with the hospital-approved surgical safety checklist.
- Confirm patient identity, procedure and surgical site before commencement of surgery.
- Ensure appropriate surgical counts of instruments, needles, sponges and other countable items before, during and after surgery.
- Ensure documentation of specimen collection and handover to the appropriate department.
- Ensure proper communication of critical information among the surgical team.
I. Housekeeping & Environmental Management
- Supervise OT housekeeping standards.
- Ensure appropriate cleaning before and after every procedure.
- Monitor terminal cleaning and scheduled deep cleaning.
- Ensure proper linen handling and disposal.
- Monitor restricted-area discipline and movement within the OT complex.
- Ensure only authorized personnel enter restricted OT areas.
J. Quality Improvement & Audit
- Participate in hospital quality improvement activities.
- Monitor OT-related indicators and identify areas requiring improvement.
- Participate in internal audits, infection-control audits and safety rounds.
- Implement corrective and preventive actions as directed by hospital management.
- Maintain OT readiness for inspections and accreditation-related assessments.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualification:
- B.Sc. Nursing / GNM / Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology or equivalent qualification appropriate to the assigned role.
Preferred:
- Additional training/certification in Operation Theatre Management, Infection Prevention and Control, or Critical Care/Perioperative Nursing.
6. Experience
- Preferred: 2–5 years of relevant OT experience.
- Experience in a hospital, nursing home or surgical centre will be preferred.
- Previous supervisory or OT management experience will be an advantage.
Pay: ₹12,000.00 - ₹15,000.00 per month
