ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to take end-to-end ownership of our backend systems -- stabilizing, fixing, and scaling a live production codebase.

This is not a role where you will be handed a clean spec and a clean codebase. You will be working in a real, evolving system with live users, and you are expected to dive in, understand it fast, and start contributing without hand-holding. We need someone who treats the system like their own -- tracing issues to their root cause and fixing them properly, not patching symptoms.

RESPONSIBILITIES

- Take end-to-end ownership of backend systems, including architecture, data integrity, performance, and reliability

- Debug and fix root-cause issues in an existing, undocumented codebase

- Design and ship backend features independently, from requirement to deployment

- Fix recurring and systemic bugs at the source rather than applying surface-level patches

- Work closely with leadership on product and technical decisions -- this role carries real ownership, not just execution

REQUIREMENTS





- 4 to 6 years of hands-on backend experience in real, production environments

- Strong expertise in Node.js and Express

- Proficiency with Sequelize 6 (ORM), MySQL, and PostgreSQL

- Experience with AWS and Firebase

- Proven track record of owning systems end-to-end, not just feature work under supervision

- Ability to get oriented quickly in an unfamiliar or imperfect codebase and start contributing without extensive ramp-up

- Debugging-first mindset -- able to trace issues through messy data and code to find the actual root cause

- Ability to work fast without sacrificing judgment, including effective use of AI development tools such as Cursor, Copilot, or Claude

- Strong ownership mindset -- identifies what is broken or inefficient and fixes it without being told

- Genuine care for product quality and end-user impact

- Ability to walk through specific systems you have built, the decisions you made, and the impact they had

POSITIVE TO HAVE

- Prior experience working on payment systems, including integrity, reconciliation, and reliability around live transactions

- Prior experience at an EdTech company

- Experience mentoring or unblocking other engineers

- Startup or small-team experience with broad ownership across the stack
