Role & responsibilities

Job Summary: The Fitter marks out, assembles and fits up fabricated components to drawing before welding, and carries out final assembly afterwards. Fit-up accuracy governs weld quality, distortion, dimensional compliance and rework, and therefore determines a large part of the unit's cost of quality.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Interpret fabrication drawings, weld maps and assembly marking plans and mark out components accurately for cutting, drilling and assembly.

- Set up and fit up assemblies to drawing - root gap, alignment, squareness, level, orientation and datum - within specified fabrication tolerance.

- Verify material grade, thickness and heat-number identification against the drawing before assembly, and preserve identification through the operation.

- Build and use jigs, fixtures and temporary supports to hold alignment and restrain distortion.

- Carry out tack welding to the approved sequence where qualified to do so.

- Operate drilling, tapping, cutting, gouging, grinding and profile-cutting equipment as the job requires.

- Check dimensions with tape, square, level, spirit level, root gap gauge, hi-lo gauge, bridge cam gauge, vernier and micrometer at each stage, and present the assembly for fit-up inspection.

- Carry out final assembly, alignment and closure operations after welding, including corrective heat straightening under supervision where approved.

- Maintain segregation of tools and consumables between carbon steel and stainless steel work.

- Keep the work bay clean and organised to 5S standard and account for tools and tackle issued.

- Guide and check the work of grinders and workmen assigned to the assembly.

- Rig and move assemblies only with lifting tackle carrying valid third-party certification to Form 10,



with the safe working load legibly marked and colour coding current; reject and return any uncertified or damaged sling, shackle or chain block.

- Confirm the load weight, the centre of gravity, the sling angle and the lift path before every lift, cordon the area, and never allow anyone to stand under a suspended load.

- Take direction from the approved Rigger Foreman on any critical lift, and stop lifting in high wind.

- When working at height, work from a tagged scaffold inspected within the week, from a certified man basket or scissor lift, and wear a full body harness with shock absorber anchored to an approved point.

- Check the scaffold tag before climbing; do not use an untagged or red-tagged scaffold.

- When working in a confined space, work only under permit with gas testing, forced ventilation, 24 V lighting and portable tools, a standby man and a means of communication.

- Use only fibre-body angle grinders fitted with handle, wheel guard and dead-man control, with wheels to EN 12413 carrying RPM and expiry markings.

- Stack material on beds or sleepers without over-stacking and keep gangways and laydown barricades intact.

- Attend the daily toolbox talk and sign the register; report every near miss and unsafe condition.

Safety helmet to IS 2925 / EN 397; safety shoes to IS 5676 / IS 15298 / EN ISO 20345; safety goggles to IS 5983-1978 / EN 166; boiler suit or coverall.



Leather hand gloves to IS 6994 / EN 12477 and cut-resistant gloves to EN 388; grinder's face shield to IS 8521 / EN 175 / EN 166 when grinding; ear plugs to IS 9167 / EN 352-2; full body safety harness with shock absorber to IS 3521 / EN 361 when working at height.

Preferred candidate profile Required Education and Experience

•

ITI in Fitter trade from a recognised institute.

•

5 to 10 years of fabrication fitting experience in heavy or medium fabrication, process equipment or structural steel work.

•

Experience of fit-up under customer or third-party inspection is an advantage.

•

Rigger training is an advantage and will be provided; a Rigger Foreman certification is a distinct advantage.

Competencies

•

Fluent reading of orthographic and isometric fabrication drawings, weld maps, welding symbols and GD&T; callouts.

•

Competent use of measuring and marking equipment - tape, square, spirit level, root gap gauge, hi-lo gauge, bridge cam gauge, vernier, micrometer, height gauge, protractor, punch and scriber.

•

Sound rigging and slinging judgement and current crane and rigging safety awareness.

•

Practical understanding of weld shrinkage and distortion and of how fit-up choices control it.

•

Ability to fabricate straightforward jigs and fixtures without a detailed drawing.

•

Physical fitness for sustained standing, bending, working at height and heavy handling.
