Role & responsibilities Job Summary: The Design Engineer converts customer drawings, data sheets and specifications into manufacturable shop documentation - fabrication drawings, weld maps, nesting layouts, bending development, jig and fixture design and bills of material. The role is the technical gate between what the customer has ordered and what the shop builds, and directly governs material yield, fit-up accuracy and rework.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Review incoming customer drawings, specifications, data sheets and codes; raise technical queries and secure written clarification before release to the shop.

- Prepare fabrication and assembly drawings, weld maps, cutting plans and shop bills of material in 2D and 3D (AutoCAD, SolidWorks or equivalent).

- Develop bending, rolling and forming layouts with correct bend allowance and K-factor for the JFY 2,250 kN press brake and the SNE 38 CNC tube bender.

- Prepare and optimise nesting for the SLTL 6 kW fibre laser (12,500 x 2,500 mm table) to maximise plate yield; issue the material yield standard against which the shop is measured.

- Design and detail jigs, fixtures and handling aids required to hold fabrication tolerance and to make fit-up repeatable.

- Apply welding symbols, GD&T; and fabrication tolerances in line with ASME and AWS practice and the customer specification.

- Issue, control and revise drawings under a formal revision-control discipline; ensure obsolete revisions are withdrawn from the shop floor.

- Calculate fabricated weights and support the Costing & Estimation Engineer with reliable material take-off at the enquiry stage.

- Specify surface preparation and paint system requirements on the drawing, including blast grade, profile and dry film thickness,



so that the blasting and painting bay works to a written standard.

- Attend fit-up and first-article inspection; resolve shop-floor discrepancies and feed corrections back into the drawing.

- Maintain the engineering data pack for each job - drawings, revisions, queries, deviations and as-built records - in an auditable form.

- Build and maintain the standard-detail and standard-part library so that repeat work is not re-engineered.

Health, Safety and Setting Responsibilities

- Design for safe handling: provide lifting lugs, padeyes and trunnions of adequate capacity, mark the centre of gravity and the safe working load on the drawing, and confirm the assembly can be lifted within the 10 MT EOT crane rating and 6 m under-hook clearance.

- Design out avoidable work at height and avoidable confined-space entry wherever the fabrication sequence allows.

- Specify soft-sling or protected lifting points on coated and machined items so that handling does not damage the coating.

- Attend the hazard identification and risk assessment review for any new or unusual fabrication method introduced by a design.

- Observe all site PPE and access rules when on the shop floor.

Preferred candidate profile

B.E. / B.Tech or Diploma in Mechanical or Production Engineering.

•

5 to 8 years in fabrication design or detailing, preferably for process equipment, pressure parts, skids or heavy structures.

•

Demonstrated experience of made-to-print work executed for a Tier-1 process-equipment or EPC customer.

Competencies

•

AutoCAD essential; SolidWorks, Inventor or Creo strongly preferred, particularly the sheet-metal and weldment environments.

•

Nesting software experience (SigmaNEST, ProNest, Lantek or equivalent) with a demonstrable record of improving plate yield.

•

Working knowledge of ASME Section VIII Division 1 and AWS D1.1 as they govern joint design and weld detailing.

•

Sound grasp of GD&T;, welding symbols, fit-up tolerance, and weld shrinkage and distortion behaviour.

•

Material knowledge across IS 2062, SA 516 Gr. 70, SS 304 and SS 316, including standard plate and section availability in the Indian market.

•

Able to hold a design position in a technical discussion with a customer's engineering team.

Drawing release against the committed engineering schedule (per cent).

•

Plate and section yield achieved against the issued nesting standard (per cent).

•

Shop-floor holds, fit-up errors or rework events traced to a drawing or detailing error.

•
