Job Summary

The Duty Medical Officer is responsible for providing timely medical care to inpatients and emergency patients during the assigned duty shift. The DMO will assess patients, initiate appropriate management within their scope of practice, coordinate with consultants and clinical departments, monitor patient conditions, maintain accurate medical records and ensure continuity of patient care in accordance with hospital policies and applicable clinical and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

1. Patient Assessment & Clinical Care

- Assess patients admitted to the hospital and patients presenting to the emergency department.
- Obtain relevant medical history and perform appropriate clinical examinations.
- Monitor vital signs and overall clinical condition of patients.
- Identify changes in patient condition and initiate appropriate action promptly.
- Provide medical management within the scope of qualification and hospital protocols.
- Review investigation reports and communicate significant findings to the concerned consultant.
- Reassess patients periodically and document clinical findings.

2. Emergency Care

- Attend to medical emergencies promptly during the assigned shift.
- Perform initial assessment and stabilization of emergency patients.
- Initiate appropriate emergency measures and basic/advanced life-support procedures according to training and hospital protocols.
- Coordinate with emergency, ICU, anaesthesia and other specialty teams when required.
- Escalate critical patients to the appropriate consultant without delay.
- Assist in emergency procedures within the scope of training and authorization.

3. Inpatient Management

- Conduct regular rounds of assigned inpatients.
- Monitor patients' clinical progress and response to treatment.
- Follow consultant instructions and ensure prescribed treatment is carried out appropriately.
- Identify deterioration in patient condition and immediately inform the treating consultant.
- Coordinate investigations, procedures and referrals as required.
- Ensure appropriate handover of patients between shifts.

4. Consultant Coordination

- Communicate with consultants regarding new admissions, emergencies and significant changes in patient condition.
- Inform consultants promptly about critical investigation results or abnormal clinical findings.
- Assist consultants during clinical procedures when required.




- Ensure consultant instructions are documented and followed appropriately.
- Coordinate interdepartmental referrals and consultations.

5. Medication & Treatment

- Prescribe or administer medications within professional scope and hospital policy.
- Verify medication orders and monitor patients for adverse reactions.
- Ensure appropriate documentation of medications and treatment provided.
- Exercise particular caution with high-alert medications and emergency medications.
- Report medication errors or adverse drug events through the established hospital reporting system.

6. Documentation & Medical Records

- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
- Record patient history, examination findings, diagnosis, treatment and progress notes.
- Complete admission, transfer, referral and discharge-related documentation as applicable.
- Maintain accurate emergency records and medico-legal documentation.
- Ensure patient records are complete, legible and confidential.

7. Patient & Attender Communication

- Communicate professionally with patients and their attendants.
- Explain basic treatment plans, investigations and procedures within the scope of the DMO's role.
- Address routine medical queries and escalate complex issues to the concerned consultant.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and respect patient rights.
- Obtain consent as required according to hospital policy and applicable law.

8. Patient Safety & Infection Control

- Follow hospital patient-safety policies and clinical SOPs.
- Ensure appropriate patient identification before procedures, medications and investigations.
- Follow infection prevention and control practices.
- Adhere to hand hygiene and standard precautions.
- Report adverse events, near misses and patient-safety incidents promptly.
- Participate in hospital emergency preparedness and code-response activities.

9. Clinical Handover

- Provide complete and structured handover to the incoming DMO/medical team.
- Highlight critically ill patients, pending investigations, important clinical developments and consultant instructions.
- Ensure continuity of care during shift changes.

10. Quality & NABH Compliance

- Comply with applicable hospital policies, SOPs and NABH quality and patient-safety requirements.
- Participate in clinical audits and quality-improvement activities.




- Maintain required clinical documentation and records.
- Participate in hospital training, mock drills and competency programmes.
- Support implementation of clinical protocols and patient-safety initiatives.

11. Medico-Legal Responsibilities

- Follow hospital protocols for medico-legal cases.
- Ensure appropriate documentation of injuries, accidents and other medico-legal cases.
- Inform the appropriate authority/consultant regarding medico-legal cases as per hospital policy.
- Maintain confidentiality and proper preservation of relevant records.

Qualifications

- MBBS from a recognized medical institution.
- Valid registration with the applicable State Medical Council / National Medical Commission as required.
- Current registration and documentation must be maintained as per applicable regulations.

Pay: ₹45,000.00 - ₹50,000.00 per month
