A Medical Representative (MR) acts as the vital, strategic link between pharmaceutical companies and healthcare professionals (HCPs). Their primary objective is to promote pharmaceutical drugs, treatments, and medical equipment to doctors, pharmacists, and hospital staff to drive prescription generation and brand awareness.
The core roles and responsibilities of an MR are categorized into the following functional areas:
1. Product Promotion & Detailing
- Scientific Presentations: Delivering detailed product presentations (known as product detailing) to doctors, explaining drug compositions, indications, mechanisms of action, and clinical trial benefits.
- Disseminating Information: Educating medical practitioners on correct dosages, potential side effects, interactions, and safety data.
- Sample Distribution: Providing compliant drug samples and leave-behind literature to help physicians evaluate a medicine's therapeutic efficacy firsthand.
2. Relationship Management
- Doctor and Institution Visits: Planning and managing daily routes to systematically meet an average of 8–12 doctors, specialists, and hospital administrative staff.
- Stakeholder Network: Building long-term, trust-based professional networks with retail chemists, hospital pharmacies, and stockists.
- Feedback Collection: Acting as a point of contact for after-sales support, answering physician queries, and addressing product availability or logistical concerns.

Sales & Territory Management
- Target Achievement: Meeting and exceeding monthly, quarterly, and annual sales goals mapped out by the pharmaceutical company.
- Commercial Availability: Coordinating with local pharmacists and wholesale distributors to ensure that the promoted drug brands are well-stocked and readily available whenever a doctor writes a prescription.
- Route Planning: Optimizing travel within an assigned geographical sector to ensure complete market coverage and maximize visibility.
4. Market Intelligence & Activities
- Competitor Tracking: Conducting ongoing market research to monitor competing brands, pricing models, marketing strategies, and shifting doctor preferences.
- Medical Events: Planning, organizing, and executing product launch events, medical workshops, and Continuing Medical Education (CME) seminars for healthcare practitioners.
5. Administration & Compliance
- Reporting: Maintaining strict records of daily interactions and logging data via Daily Call Reports (DCR) or Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tracking software.
- Ethical Marketing: Ensuring all promotional actions, sponsorships, and interactions align stringently with company policies, local healthcare regularities, and statutory ethical codes.
