Job Title: Emergency In-Charge
Department: Emergency Department / Casualty
Reports To: Medical Superintendent / Hospital Administrator / Head of Emergency Services

Job Summary

The Emergency In-Charge is responsible for the overall coordination, supervision, and smooth functioning of the Emergency Department. The role ensures timely patient assessment and care, effective coordination among doctors, nurses, technicians, and support staff, proper documentation, and compliance with hospital policies and emergency-care protocols.

Key Responsibilities

- Supervise the day-to-day operations of the Emergency Department.
- Ensure timely triage, assessment, stabilization, treatment, and disposition of emergency patients.
- Coordinate with emergency physicians, consultants, nursing staff, laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, ICU, OT, and other departments.
- Monitor emergency staffing, duty rosters, attendance, and workload.
- Ensure adequate availability of emergency medicines, equipment, consumables, beds, and other resources.
- Monitor compliance with hospital SOPs, infection-control practices, patient-safety standards, and emergency protocols.
- Handle emergency situations, overcrowding, critical cases, and operational issues promptly.
- Facilitate admission, transfer, referral, discharge, and medico-legal processes as applicable.
- Ensure accurate and timely maintenance of patient records, registers, reports, and incident documentation.
- Monitor response times, patient flow, waiting times, and quality indicators in the Emergency Department.
- Investigate and escalate patient complaints, adverse incidents,



and operational problems.
- Conduct or coordinate staff training, emergency drills, and competency assessments.
- Ensure proper handover between shifts and effective communication among team members.
- Coordinate with ambulance and external referral services when required.
- Participate in quality-improvement initiatives, audits, accreditation requirements, and hospital committees.
- Prepare regular reports regarding emergency workload, incidents, staffing, and departmental performance.
- Perform other duties assigned by hospital management.

Qualifications

- Degree/diploma in Nursing, Emergency Medical Services, Hospital Administration, or a relevant healthcare field, depending on the hospital's requirements.
- Relevant skilled registration/licensure where applicable.
- Experience in an Emergency Department or hospital setting.
- Training in BLS/ACLS or equivalent emergency-care certifications is desirable.
