Main roles of a pulmonologist

- Diagnose and manage patients with respiratory and pulmonary disorders.
- Conduct OPD consultations and evaluate patients with respiratory complaints.
- Provide regular IPD patient care, including clinical assessment, treatment planning, and follow-up. Diagnoses and treats asthma, COPD, pneumonia, tuberculosis, bronchitis, and other lung diseases.
- Evaluates chronic cough, breathlessness, wheezing, chest tightness, and low oxygen levels.
- Manages sleep-related breathing disorders, including sleep apnea.
- Treats interstitial lung diseases and pulmonary fibrosis.
- Evaluates lung nodules and other abnormalities seen on chest X-rays or CT scans.
- Manages pulmonary hypertension and other disorders of the pulmonary circulation.
- Performs or interprets tests such as spirometry/PFTs, bronchoscopy, and sleep studies.
- Provides care for patients requiring long-term oxygen therapy or ventilatory support.
- Works with intensivists and other specialists in ICU and critical-care settings, depending on their training.
