Position: L2 Network Engineer

Work Location: Coimbatore

Experience: 2-5 years of experience in Network Engineering, NOC or ISP Operations.

Job Summary

We are looking for a technically skilled L2 Network Engineer to support network operations across ISP, broadband, FTTH/GPON, and IPTV services. The role involves resolving incidents escalated by L1/NOC teams, configuring and maintaining network equipment, coordinating service restoration, and ensuring network availability and reliability within defined service-level agreements (SLAs).

Preferred Experience

1. Strong hands-on experience in ISP, FTTH, broadband, data center, or network operations environments.

2. Experience with network monitoring and troubleshooting platforms is preferred. Knowledge of Zabbix, PRTG, LibreNMS, Grafana, Wireshark, syslog platforms, and SNMP-based monitoring is an advantage.

3. CCNA, CCNP, MikroTik MTCNA/MTCRE, or vendor-specific networking certifications are an advantage; certifications are not mandatory for candidates with strong practical networking experience.

Required Skills:

Technical Skills

1. Networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, OSI and TCP/IP models, IPv4 addressing and subnetting, basic IPv6, TCP/UDP, ARP, ICMP, DNS, and DHCP.

2. Switching: VLANs, 802.1Q, access/trunk ports, STP/RSTP/MSTP, LACP/port channels, MAC tables, broadcast domains, and loop prevention.

3. Routing: static/default routing, OSPF, BGP fundamentals, route selection, routing tables, administrative distance, and basic route filtering.

4. ISP technologies: PPPoE, RADIUS, NAT/CGNAT, VLAN-based subscriber management, FTTH/GPON, OLT/ONT, and basic multicast/IPTV networking.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

5. Strong analytical,



troubleshooting, communication, coordination, and documentation skills, with close attention to detail.

6. Ability to remain calm under pressure during outages and independently handle L2 incidents.

Key Responsibilities:

Network Monitoring and Operations

1. Monitor network infrastructure, links, devices, and services; perform proactive health checks and identify potential network problems.

2. Track bandwidth utilization, interface errors, CPU and memory utilization, and link status; troubleshoot outages, latency, packet loss, and connectivity issues.

3. Handle incidents escalated by L1/NOC teams, track them through closure within defined SLAs, and coordinate with relevant teams during major outages.

Routing and Switching

1. Configure, troubleshoot, and maintain Layer 2 and Layer 3 devices, including VLANs, trunk and access ports, STP/RSTP/MSTP, LACP/port channels, and inter-VLAN routing.

2. Support static routing, OSPF, and BGP; troubleshoot asymmetric routing, routing loops, and incorrect route advertisements.

3. Analyze routing tables, ARP and MAC address tables, and interface statistics; implement configuration changes in accordance with approved procedures.

ISP and Broadband Network Operations

1. Troubleshoot subscriber connectivity involving DHCP, PPPoE, RADIUS, DNS, NAT/CGNAT, VLAN-based subscriber networks, IP addressing, and subnetting.

2. Diagnose last-mile and aggregation connectivity issues using an understanding of ISP architecture and traffic flow.

3. Coordinate with upstream providers and transit/peering partners to resolve connectivity issues.

FTTH and GPON Support

1. Troubleshoot ONT/ONU connectivity and authentication issues, including offline devices, loss of signal (LOS), optical power, VLAN/service configuration, and DHCP/PPPoE connectivity.

2. Work with OLT, ONT, splitter, PON, and aggregation network architecture; coordinate with field teams to resolve physical-layer faults.

IPTV and Network Services

1. Troubleshoot IPTV and streaming interruptions caused by connectivity, multicast, VLAN,



or routing issues, using knowledge of IGMP, IGMP snooping, multicast VLANs, and PIM basics.

2. Coordinate with content, server, and application teams when issues extend beyond the network.

Technical Troubleshooting

1. Use ping, traceroute/tracert, MTR, ARP, DNS utilities, TCP/IP analysis, packet capture/Wireshark, interface and routing diagnostics, MAC table analysis, VLAN verification, and route/path analysis.

2. Isolate faults across physical connectivity, switching, routing, IP addressing, DNS/DHCP, authentication, upstream connectivity, servers/applications, and customer premises equipment.

Network Configuration and Maintenance

1. Configure routers, switches, OLTs, and other network equipment; take and verify configuration backups.

2. Perform firmware/software upgrades, approved changes, planned maintenance, and network migrations with minimal service disruption.

Incident Management and Coordination

1. Independently manage L2 incidents within defined SLAs, analyze faults before escalation to L3/vendor teams, and provide detailed technical information.

2. Participate in major incident troubleshooting, document incidents and resolutions, perform root-cause analysis, and recommend corrective actions for recurring issues.

3. Coordinate effectively with L1, L3, field, vendor, and management teams.

Documentation

1. Maintain network diagrams, IP address allocations, VLAN details, device inventories, circuit/link information, and configuration records.

2. Keep incident reports, troubleshooting procedures, change records, and network standard operating procedures (SOPs) accurate and up to date.

Educational Qualification:

- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics, Telecommunications, Networking, or a related field. Equivalent practical networking experience may also be considered.

Work Schedule

Willingness to work in rotational shifts and provide on-call support when required.
