JOB DESCRIPTION – SEWING TRAINEE

Job Title: Sewing Trainee
Department: Production – Sewing
Function: Manufacturing / Operations
Reports To: Sewing Supervisor / Line In-Charge
Location: Factory / Production Unit
Employment Type: Trainee / Permanent
Experience: Freshers can apply; prior sewing experience is an added advantage.

1. Job Summary

The Sewing Trainee will undergo practical training in garment stitching operations, industrial sewing machine handling, garment construction, quality standards, and production processes.

The trainee will learn to perform sewing operations under supervision while maintaining the required quality, productivity, safety, and workplace discipline standards.

2. Key Responsibilities

- Learn and perform basic garment sewing operations as per training instructions.
- Operate industrial sewing machines under the guidance of the supervisor/trainer.
- Learn different sewing operations and stitching techniques used in garment production.
- Handle fabric, garment components, threads, needles, and accessories properly.
- Follow production specifications, work instructions, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Maintain required stitching quality and identify basic sewing defects.
- Maintain proper alignment, stitch quality, seam allowance, and garment appearance.
- Achieve assigned production targets after completion of the training period.
- Report machine problems, material issues, quality defects, and production difficulties to the supervisor.
- Keep the machine, tools, and workplace clean and organized.
- Follow all safety instructions and use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Follow factory rules, attendance requirements, shift timings, and workplace discipline.
- Cooperate with team members and support smooth production flow.
- Participate in skill development and cross-training programs.

3. Training Areas

The trainee will be trained in:

- Basic sewing machine operation.
- Machine parts and functions.
- Threading and bobbin handling.




- Needle and thread selection.
- Stitch formation and stitch quality.
- Fabric handling and garment component alignment.
- Basic machine adjustments.
- Identification of sewing defects.
- Quality inspection requirements.
- Production methods and productivity improvement.
- Workplace safety and housekeeping.

4. Qualification

- Minimum 8th / 10th Pass preferred.
- Basic reading and writing skills.
- Sewing/tailoring course or ITI qualification is an added advantage.
- Freshers with willingness to learn may be considered.

National qualification standards for sewing machine operators also recognize entry-level candidates without prior experience.

7. Working Conditions

- Work in a garment manufacturing / sewing production environment.

- Continuous operation of industrial sewing machines as assigned.
- Compliance with factory safety, quality, and production procedures is mandatory.

8. Career Progression

Based on skill, performance, productivity, and experience, the trainee may progress to:

Sewing Trainee → Sewing Operator → Multi-Skilled Operator → Senior Operator → Line Leader

9. Training Period

Training Period: 3–6 months or as per company policy.

Successful completion of training will be evaluated based on sewing skills, quality, productivity, attendance, discipline, and overall performance.
