Job Summary The Operation Theatre Nurse is responsible for providing safe, efficient, and high-quality nursing care to patients before, during, and after surgical procedures. The role involves assisting the surgical team, maintaining aseptic techniques, ensuring OT readiness, and adhering to hospital policies and patient-safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

- Prepare the Operation Theatre, instruments, equipment, and supplies before scheduled procedures.

- Receive and assess patients before surgery and ensure proper identification and documentation.

- Assist surgeons, anesthetists, and other members of the surgical team during procedures.

- Perform scrub nurse and circulating nurse responsibilities as assigned.

- Maintain strict aseptic and infection-control practices throughout the surgical procedure.

- Prepare and handle surgical instruments, consumables, sutures, implants, and other OT supplies.

- Perform instrument, sponge, needle, and swab counts before, during, and after surgery.

- Ensure proper sterilization and safe handling of surgical instruments.

- Monitor and maintain OT equipment and promptly report malfunction or shortage of supplies.

- Assist with patient positioning, transfer, preparation, and post-operative handover.

- Maintain accurate nursing records, surgical checklists, and other required documentation.

- Follow WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and hospital OT protocols.

- Coordinate with CSSD, Anesthesia, Laboratory, Blood Bank,



and other relevant departments as required.

- Ensure safe disposal of biomedical waste according to hospital policy.

- Support emergency and critical surgical procedures when required.

- Maintain patient privacy, dignity, confidentiality, and safety at all times.

- Participate in quality improvement, infection-control, audits, training, and continuing nursing education.

- Perform other duties assigned by the OT In-charge / Nursing Superintendent.

Required Qualifications

- B.Sc. Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing / GNM from a recognized institution.

- Valid registration with the respective State Nursing Council.

- OT / Perioperative Nursing certification or relevant training will be an added advantage.

Experience

- Experience in an Operation Theatre / Surgical Unit is preferred.

- Experience with major surgeries, emergency procedures, and multidisciplinary surgical teams will be an advantage.

- Freshers with relevant OT training may also be considered, depending on hospital requirements.

Key Skills

- Knowledge of surgical procedures and OT protocols.

- Solid understanding of aseptic and infection-control practices.

- Good knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment.

- Ability to work effectively under pressure.

- Good communication and coordination skills.

- Strong attention to detail and patient-safety focus.
