Design Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Design Manager owns the entire design department's output, people, and process. The role holds full people-management responsibility for the design team (Assistant Design Manager, Lead Designer, Senior/Associate/Junior Designers), is accountable for design quality and delivery across all live projects, and is the primary design interface with Sales, Production, and Site leadership.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Team & People Management

- Manage the full design team's structure, workload distribution, and capacity planning.
- Set individual and team targets; conduct performance reviews and development planning.
- Hire, onboard, and train designers; identify and close skill gaps across the team.
- Manage escalations, conflicts, and performance issues within the team.

Design Quality & Delivery Ownership

- Own final design sign-off standards across all projects before client presentation.
- Ensure consistent design quality, brand alignment, and execution feasibility department-wide.
- Review and resolve high-value or high-risk project issues escalated by Lead Designer/Assistant Design Manager.

Business & Cross-Functional Alignment

- Partner with Sales leadership on design-led proposals, pitch strategy,



and conversion improvement.
- Align with Production and Procurement on cost, material, and timeline feasibility at a portfolio level.
- Represent the design function in leadership/management reviews.

Process, Systems & Reporting

- Own design department SOPs, tools, and CRM/documentation standards.
- Track and report department-wide KPIs, capacity utilization, and pipeline health to leadership.
- Drive continuous improvement in design turnaround time, cost efficiency, and client satisfaction.

Budget & Resource Ownership

- Manage design department budget, including software, resources, and training spend.
- Approve resourcing decisions (freelancers, additional hires) based on pipeline demand.

KEY SUCCESS METRICS (KPIs)

- Department-wide proposal-to-booking conversion rate.
- Department-wide on-time delivery rate for drawings/BOQs.
- Overall client satisfaction score (CSAT) across all projects.
- Department-wide design-to-execution deviation rate.
- Team attrition/retention and average time-to-productivity for new hires.
- Escalations resolved at department level vs. escalated further.
- Design department cost efficiency (cost per project / budget adherence).
- Number of team members promoted/upskilled within the year.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

- Bachelor's/Master's degree in Interior Design, Architecture, or a related field.
- Robust command of design software (AutoCAD, SketchUp, 3ds Max/V-Ray, or similar).

Experience

- 9–10 years in interior design, including 3 years directly managing a design team.
- Proven experience owning department-level delivery, budgets, and people management.
