The Trainee Database Developer role at SKO Systems provides hands-on experience in the design, development, and maintenance of the databases that support SKO's enterprise product suite. Trainees are placed within a product team, where the initial focus is on understanding the product, its data model, and its business context before moving on to focused work in the database technology stack. The position supports the engineering team by contributing to SQL development.

Tasks, assisting with data modelling, and resolving basic issues under the guidance of senior developers.

Learning & Product Familiarisation

· Learn the product, its core modules, data model, and third-party integrations.

· Understand how business processes map to the underlying database design.

· Update technical documentation and data dictionaries as needed.

· Participate in sprint demos and team meetings.

· Collaborate with Product Managers and business analysts to understand data requirements.

Database Development & Data Modelling

· Write, test, and optimise SQL queries, stored procedures, and functions under guidance.

· Assist in designing and updating database schemas, tables, and ER diagrams.

· Support data migration, transformation, and integration tasks.

· Participate in estimation and sprint planning.

· Deliver assigned user stories with support from senior team members.

· Follow database coding standards, naming conventions, and best practices.

Performance Tuning & Troubleshooting

· Monitor database performance and assist in identifying bottlenecks.

· Use profiling and monitoring tools to troubleshoot issues as directed.

· Learn and support indexing and query optimisation strategies with guidance.

· Participate in root cause analysis and continuous improvement.

Data Quality, Security & Compliance

· Assist in implementing data security measures and access controls.





· Help ensure data consistency, integrity, and quality across environments.

· Support compliance with applicable data protection regulations.

· Participate in peer reviews of database changes.

Environment Support & Release Activities

· Assist with deployments, patches, backups, restores, and upgrades under guidance.

· Support monitoring of availability, failover readiness, and environmental health checks.

· Follow defined change control processes for database releases.

Cross-functional Collaboration

· Work with product managers, business analysts, QA, backend, and DevOps teams.

· Participate in sprint planning, code reviews, and defect triaging.

· Troubleshoot data-related issues across the stack with support from senior team members.

Technical Documentation & Agile Participation

· Document data models, technical solutions, and dependencies.

· Apply Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban).

· Prioritise tasks and track progress.

· Maintain release notes and change logs, as needed.

Continuous Learning & Growth

· Engage in continuous learning and knowledge-sharing sessions.

· Build working knowledge of Linux environments and shell scripting.

· Explore AI-assisted tools for query optimisation, data profiling, and documentation with guidance.

· Seek feedback and proactively improve.

Ideal candidates are freshers with sound SQL fundamentals, a foundational understanding of database concepts, and a strong willingness to learn.



The role involves close collaboration with senior developers, product teams, QA, and DevOps, offering practical exposure to the full development lifecycle while steadily building technical proficiency and professional confidence.

Requirements

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s Degree

Field of Education

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalent relevant experience.

Required Certifications

Not required; Oracle, MySQL, AWS, or GCP certifications are advantageous.

Required Years and Area of Professional Experience

Fresher / 0 years; internship, academic project, or self-learning exposure in SQL or database development will be an added advantage.

Critical Technical Skills

Basic knowledge of SQL, Oracle or MySQL, ER modelling, query optimisation, backup and recovery concepts, Git, and debugging concepts.

Other Requirements

Willingness to learn, adapt, and collaborate in a team environment; problem-solving mindset and attention to detail.

Preferred Education

Bachelor’s degree in computer science.

Preferred Experience

Academic projects, internship, certification, or hands-on practice in database development, backend integration, or reporting tools such as SSRS or SSIS preferred. Exposure to PL/SQL, Oracle APEX, shell scripting, or cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP will be an added advantage.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Solid database fundamentals, eagerness to learn, basic understanding of software development life cycle, data modelling, query optimisation, and logical problem-solving.
