Job Summary

Senior Publisher, HSS Journals is responsible for the growth, development and editorial management of a portfolio of Humanities and Social Sciences journals with the aim of becoming market leader within selected disciplines and geographies.

Responsibilities

1. Drive the editorial and publishing development of a portfolio of journals

- Drive the growth and development of a group of journals as part of the strategically defined overall portfolio within the Journals group, leveraging Strategic Mindset and Business Insights.

- Develop your journals to deliver a best-in-class author experience and enjoy maximum engagement from the Editors in Chief and Editorial Board Members (EBMs), demonstrating strong Balances Stakeholders and Communicates Effectively capabilities.

- Understand and manage the annual targets for journal submission, publication and transfer volumes as well as target turnaround times, applying Business Insights and Financial Acumen.

- Ensure that all KPIs are regularly monitored, reported and met, and that action is taken as needed, utilizing Business Insights and Strategic Mindset.

- Strive for maximal efficiency and productivity of your editors, peer-reviewers and EBMs and manage/streamline the peer-review process for your journals through strong Editorial Skills.

- Develop robust working relationships with colleagues in production, JEO, IT and other departments to ensure that any problems encountered with your journal, and particularly by authors, editors and peer reviewers, can be swiftly and effectively resolved, demonstrating the ability to Balance Stakeholders and Communicate Effectively.

- Manage annual Journal Development Plans and oversee their implementation and successful conclusion, applying Strategic Mindset and Business Insights.

2. Understand and engage regularly with the research communities and third-party partners that your journals serve

- Attend external meetings to build close working relationships with external EiCs, EBMs,



society partners and the wider research community, utilizing Communicates Effectively and Consulting Skills.

- Understand the trends and changes in the communities you serve to ensure that Springer Nature can respond with increased publishing volumes and/or current editors/EBMs, leveraging Market Intelligence and Strategic Mindset.

- Become recognized as an outstanding publishing expert by the members of the relevant research communities through strong Editorial Skills and Consulting Skills.

- Develop and maintain relationships with a network of researchers, demonstrating the ability to Balance Stakeholders and Communicate Effectively.

- Be aware of changes within the research community and publishing industry, and translate these into proposals for successful (new) products and services, including the possible acquisition of new society contracts, utilizing Market Intelligence, Business Insights, and Consulting Skills.

3. Contribute to the wider Springer Nature Journals group

- Take part in cross-departmental projects and/or company-wide task forces and working groups, demonstrating Balances Stakeholders and Communicates Effectively.

- Ensure that you understand and can explain the key strategic goals of the division and key publishing initiatives, applying Strategic Mindset, Business Insights, and Communicates Effectively.

- Take responsibility for timely resolution of research integrity/publication misconduct issues that arise in any of your journals (both pre-publication and post-publication), working with the Springer Nature Research Integrity Group (SNRIG) and Editors-in-Chief or their equivalents as appropriate, utilizing strong Editorial Skills and Consulting Skills.

- Review new journal and commercial opportunities in consultation with the Executive Editor and contribute to journal proposals, applying Market Intelligence, Business Insights, and Strategic Mindset.
