ABOUT PROTEC

PROTEC Manufacturing is a precision taper roller component manufacturer based in Rajkot, Gujarat. We supply major bearing OEMs and are committed to world-class quality in OD and face grinding of taper rollers. This role has been created to lead the next phase of our manufacturing capability development.

ROLE PURPOSE The Senior Manager Projects will own the end-to-end development, commissioning, and productivity ramp-up of new grinding lines (OD and face grinding of taper rollers) at PROTEC. This is a hands-on technical leadership role, not a back-office project management position. The person will drive new technology adoption, line upgradation, process development, vendor identification, and team capability building directly accountable to the Owner.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

A. New Line Development & Commissioning

- Lead end-to-end setup of new taper roller OD and face grinding lines — from concept to first article approval
- Define machine specifications, process parameters, and tooling requirements for new grinding lines
- Develop and own the project plan: timelines, budget, milestones, and PPAP submission to OEM customers
- Identify and evaluate capital equipment vendors; conduct machine trials and negotiate technical scope (final approval via Owner)
- Plan and execute installation, commissioning, and process qualification of new CNC grinding machines
- Achieve targeted Cpk 1.67 on critical dimensions (OD, crown profile, surface finish Ra) for new products

B. Technology Upgradation & Process Improvement

- Drive upgradation of existing grinding lines — automation, improved wheel systems, in-process gauging, coolant systems
- Evaluate and introduce new grinding technologies including CBN wheel systems, CNC dressing, and in-process measurement
- Lead process development for new taper roller geometries as new customer orders are won




- Establish and maintain process control systems: SPC, control plans, MSA, PFMEA for all recent lines

C. Electrical & Mechanical Systems

- Oversee electrical and mechanical commissioning of new machines — VFDs, servo drives, CNC controllers, interlocks
- Diagnose and resolve electrical and mechanical issues on grinding machines (spindle drives, axes, coolant circuits, guarding)
- Coordinate with machine builders and electrical contractors; ensure protected and compliant installation per factory standards
- Implement predictive and preventive maintenance frameworks for newly commissioned lines

D. Team Building & Development

- Build and develop the Engineering & Projects team — operators, technicians, and junior engineers
- Create skill matrices, OJT programmes, and standard operating procedures for current lines
- Mentor team members to become self-sufficient on process monitoring, first-off inspection, and basic machine troubleshooting
- Foster a culture of Kaizen, safety-first, and quality ownership on the shop floor

E. Project & Cost Management

- Own the project budget — track capex commitments, vendor payments, and ROI milestones
- Report project status, risks, and recovery plans to Owner on a weekly basis
- Drive cost reduction through alternate vendor development, in-house capability building, and process optimisation

MUST-HAVE TECHNICAL SKILLS

- Hands-on knowledge of taper roller OD and face grinding — centreless grinding geometry, wheel selection (CBN / conventional), dressing parameters,



crown profile control
- Ability to independently specify CNC grinding machines and evaluate vendor proposals
- Understanding of taper roller dimensional and profile metrology — roundness testers, air gauges, CMM, crown measurement
- Electrical and controls knowledge: VFDs (CSS mode), CNC controllers (FANUC / Siemens preferred), servo axis diagnostics, electrical commissioning checks
- Quantitative thinking: cycle time calculation, capacity planning, OEE analysis, Cpk interpretation
- Project management: Gantt planning, vendor coordination, PPAP process, first article inspection
- TPM / SPC / PFMEA / APQP fundamentals

GOOD TO HAVE

- Experience with IIoT / in-process measurement integration on grinding lines
- SAP PM module knowledge
- Exposure to major bearing OEM quality standards and PPAP requirements
- Kaizen / Lean certification
- Knowledge of heat treatment processes for bearing steels (52100 / case-hardened grades)

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

- B.Tech / B.E. in Mechanical Engineering (mandatory)
- 12–18 years of total experience in precision machining / grinding / bearing component manufacturing
- Minimum 3–5 years in a role directly involving setup or development of grinding lines or precision machining processes (not only maintenance)
- Prior experience in bearing or taper roller component manufacturing is strongly preferred
- Experience at a precision component SME or a bearing OEM component plant is an advantage
