Senior Accountant

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Senior Accountant runs the full accounting cycle for a dedicated Mohr Partners client account. This person owns the ledgers, month end and year end close, monthly management reporting and statutory financial statements under FRS 102, applies lease accounting under FRS 102 Section 20, supports the VAT and compliance calendar, and leads audit preparation through to sign off.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own month end and year end close for assigned entities and deliver complete management reporting packages on schedule
- Maintain the nominal ledger, review the trial balance and unreconciled items before close
- Post and review accruals, prepayments, deferred income, provisions and other period end adjustments with supporting workings
- Prepare monthly management accounts with variance commentary against budget and prior period for the client's finance leadership
- Run the sales and purchase ledgers, including invoice coding, supplier payment runs, credit control support and aged reporting
- Prepare bank and control account reconciliations to a standard that would hold up under an external audit
- Prepare statutory financial statements under FRS 102 and the Companies Act 2006, including the full disclosure notes
- Prepare intercompany reconciliations, consolidation schedules and multi-currency translation workings for group structures
- Maintain fixed asset registers covering additions, disposals, depreciation and revaluation entries with a full audit trail
- Apply FRS 102 Section 20 lease requirements and maintain right of use asset and lease liability schedules
- Process lease remeasurements and modifications as contract terms,
break clauses or renewals change during the term
- Prepare cash flow forecasts and monitor working capital, funding drawdowns and interest schedules
- Support annual budgeting and reforecasting cycles, building the schedules and testing assumptions against actual results
- Post payroll journals and reconcile PAYE, pension and other payroll control accounts back to supporting HMRC reports
- Prepare VAT returns and supporting workings for Making Tax Digital submission
- Prepare corporation tax computation workings and capital allowance schedules and pass them to the client's tax advisers
- Lead year end audit preparation, build the audit file, draft the lead schedules and answer auditor queries
- Track Companies House, corporation tax, VAT and payroll deadlines and escalate early where source information runs late
- Analyse financial results and flag variances or anomalies to the client before numbers are released
- Act as escalation point for complex reconciling items, unusual transactions and anything outside the standard close process
- Document and refine close checklists, process notes and controls so the account runs consistently month to month
- Maintain organised, clearly labelled workpaper files that would hold up under a future audit or HMRC enquiry
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- M.Com or an equivalent accounting degree is required. ACCA, ACA (ICAEW), Chartered Accountant (ICAI) or CIMA is preferred
- 5 to 8 years of progressive accounting experience, with meaningful, hands-on exposure to UK GAAP reporting and UK statutory accounts preparation
- Direct,
demonstrated experience preparing statutory financial statements under FRS 102 is required, including the disclosure notes
- Practical experience across the full finance function, covering ledgers, reconciliations, management accounts, period end close and audit preparation
- Working exposure to UK VAT and general UK compliance requirements. Deep tax specialisation is not required
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Strong technical command of FRS 102 and the Companies Act 2006 reporting requirements, with working knowledge of FRS 102 Section 1A and FRS 105 for smaller entities
- Confident across the full ledger stack, from transaction posting and reconciliation through to signed statutory accounts
- Working knowledge of UK VAT, including option to tax and partial exemption where relevant to the client's business
- Practical, hands-on experience with UK accounting platforms such as Xero, Sage 50 or Sage 200, QuickBooks or NetSuite
- Advanced Excel skills, including building and maintaining your own reconciliation models, schedules and reporting packs from scratch
- Strong written and verbal communication, since this role coordinates directly with UK based finance directors, external accountants and auditors
- Comfortable managing overlapping close, reporting and filing deadlines independently, without close supervision
