- Prepare the operating room (OR):
- Set up sterile instruments, drapes, and equipment before surgery
- Ensure all surgical tools are sterilized and ready
- Assist during surgery:
- Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon quickly and accurately
- Anticipate the surgeon’s needs during procedures
- Maintain a sterile field at all times
- Patient safety:
- Verify patient identity, procedure, and surgical site
- Monitor sterile conditions to prevent infections
- Instrument management:
- Count surgical instruments, needles, and sponges before and after surgery
- Ensure nothing is left inside the patient
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses
- Communicate effectively during procedures
