Role & responsibilities
Position Summary The Resident Medical Officer (RMO) is responsible for the health, medical care, and wellbeing of all students, both day scholars and boarders, as well as first-line medical support to staff and residents on campus. The RMO lives on campus and is available round-the-clock to respond to medical emergencies, oversee the school infirmary/health centre, and ensure that the institution's health protocols meet the standards expected of a residential school. This is a position of significant responsibility and trust, requiring sound clinical judgement, calm handling of emergencies, and close coordination with the school's boarding, administrative, and academic teams.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Emergency Response
- Provide daily outpatient consultation and treatment to students, boarders, and staff at the school hospital.
- Be the first responder to all medical emergencies on campus, including sports injuries, accidents, and sudden illness, and provide immediate stabilization and first aid/advanced first aid.
- Take the clinical decision on whether a case can be managed on campus or requires referral to a hospital, and accompany or arrange for safe transfer of the student/staff member when referral is needed.
- Be available on-call 24x7, including nights, weekends, and holidays when boarders are on campus, with a system of coverage/backup arranged for periods of personal leave.
- Attend to boarding houses promptly when summoned by house parents/wardens for a sick or injured student.
Infirmary & Sick-Bay Management
- Manage the day-to-day running of the school hospital, including admission and discharge of boarders needing observation or bed rest.
- Maintain adequate stock of medicines, dressings, and emergency drugs; monitor expiry dates and reorder supplies in a timely manner.
- Ensure the infirmary and isolation rooms are clean, hygienic, and adequately equipped, in coordination with the housekeeping and facilities team.
- Supervise and coordinate with nursing staff/compounders/ayahs attached to the health centre, and provide clinical guidance on their duties.
- Maintain and calibrate essential medical equipment (thermometers, BP apparatus, oxygen concentrator, nebulizer, glucometer, AED if available, etc.).
Health Records & Documentation
- Maintain accurate, confidential medical records for every student, including allergies, chronic conditions, medication history, and immunization status.
- Prepare and update medical files at the time of student admission, in coordination with the admissions officer.
- Maintain a daily infirmary register of all cases seen, treatments given,
and referrals made.
- Prepare periodic health reports for the Principal and Board of Governors as required, including trends in illness, injuries, and any outbreaks.
- Ensure documentation complies with CBSE/state education board norms and any applicable medical/legal record-keeping requirements for schools.
Communication & Coordination
- For all major medical decisions and incidents (e.g., hospitalization, referral to a specialist, surgery, any case with legal/reputational implications, or any situation involving significant risk), ensure the information reaches the Principal firsthand, directly and without delay before or alongside informing any other stakeholder.
- Take major decisions only after consultation with the Principal; the RMO's clinical judgement guides the medical response, but the Principal must be kept in the loop and consulted before the school commits to a course of action in significant cases.
- Promptly inform parents/guardians of boarders in case of illness, injury, or hospitalization, and keep them updated on treatment and recovery.
- Liaise with the Principal, Vice Principal, Pastoral incharge and house masters on all matters relating to student health and welfare.
- Coordinate with empanelled hospitals, specialists, diagnostic labs, ambulance services, and pharmacies for referrals, investigations, and emergency support.
- Work closely with the sports department during matches, athletics meets, and physical training sessions, including being present or on standby during major sporting events.
- Support house masters, counsellors, mess manager and dietician, in identifying and managing students with ongoing health, dietary, or psychological concerns that may need medical input.
Preventive Health, Compliance & Wellbeing
- Plan and conduct annual health check-ups/medical examinations for all students in coordination with visiting specialists (dental, ophthalmic, ENT, etc.) where arranged.
- Oversee the school's immunization schedule and health awareness programmes for students and staff.
- Draft and implement health, hygiene, and safety protocols for the boarding houses, dining hall, and campus at large, including communicable disease and outbreak-management protocols.
- Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory health requirements applicable to residential schools, and support inspections/audits (CBSE, state health authorities, insurance, etc.).
- Conduct basic health, hygiene, and first-aid awareness sessions for students, house parents, and support staff as needed.
- Monitor and advise on the nutritional adequacy of the food menu in coordination with the mess manager and the dietician, especially for students with medical dietary needs.
Qualifications & Eligibility
- MBBS from a recognized university, with valid, current registration with the Medical Council of India / National Medical Commission or the respective State Medical Council.
- A minimum of 25 years of clinical experience preferred; prior experience as an RMO or in a school/college health centre, hospital emergency department, or general practice is an advantage.
- Additional certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)/Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or emergency medicine preferred.
- Experience or familiarity with pediatric and adolescent healthcare is desirable, given the student age profile (residential school, typically ages 8–18).
- Willingness to reside on campus and be available on-call, including nights, weekends, and during school holidays when boarders are present.
Key Skills & Competencies
- Sound clinical judgement and the ability to remain calm and decisive in emergencies.
- Strong communication skills to deal sensitively with children, anxious parents, and school staff.
- High standards of confidentiality, integrity, and record-keeping.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a larger administrative and boarding team, and to follow institutional protocols.
- Patience and warmth in dealing with children and adolescents, along with firmness where required (e.g., enforcing isolation/quarantine protocols).
- Basic proficiency with computers for maintaining digital health records and reports.
Working Conditions
- Residential accommodation on or near campus is provided/required, as the role demands proximity for emergency response.
- The role involves on-call responsibility outside standard working hours, including nights and weekends during term time, with coverage arrangements during the RMO's leave.
- Duty hours and leave will be governed by the school's policy for residential/essential-services staff.
Remuneration & Benefits Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, as per Daly College's HR policy. On-campus residential accommodation and other perks applicable to residential staff will be provided as per institutional norms.
