About the Role
We're building the optical highway to the cosmos.
QOSMIC builds advanced laser communication systems that replace traditional radio frequencies, delivering faster, more secure data transfer for LEO constellations, defense networks, and deep-space missions. With our patented architecture, we are moving rapidly toward commercial spaceflight deployment. We are incubated at ARTPARK/IISc and backed by top-tier investors including Accel, Prosus, South Park Commons and ARTPARK.
We are seeking an Optomechanical Engineer to design, analyze, and build the precision hardware that makes our satellite space terminals (ZAPHOD) and optical ground stations (ARGUS) a reality. In this role, you will take absolute ownership of optomechanical assemblies throughout their lifecycle from initial conceptual design and finite element analysis (FEA) to physical prototyping, integration, and testing. You will operate in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary deep-tech environment, actively translating complex optical requirements into flight-ready hardware.
Responsibilities
● Design precision optomechanical assemblies for satellite-based optical communications payloads and ground-based optical receivers.
● Perform structural and thermal FEA to validate mechanical integrity under launch loads, on-orbit thermal cycling, and stringent optical stability requirements.
● Partner directly with the optical design team to translate complex optical prescriptions and critical alignment sensitivities into robust mounts, holders, and structural interfaces for transmit/receive chains.
● Engineer thermally compensated mounts and structural interfaces that maintain optical stability and alignment integrity across temperature extremes.
● Lead the physical assembly,
integration, and testing phases, actively developing calibration and precision optical alignment procedures for laboratory, environmental testing, and field deployment.
Requirements
● Master’s degree (M.Tech/M.S. or higher) in Mechanical Engineering, Precision Engineering, Optics, or a related discipline.
● Minimum 2+ years of hands-on, professional experience driving optomechanical hardware design on physical systems.
● Demonstrated high proficiency in SolidWorks for CAD and ANSYS Mechanical for structural/thermal finite element analysis.
● Deep technical understanding of kinematic mount design, passive/active athermalization techniques, and precision optomechanical tolerancing principles.
● Ownership mindset and proven ability to own complex optomechanical subsystems from blank page through detailed CAD, FEA, assembly, and alignment with high autonomy.
● Comfortable working under pressure in a fast-paced, high-stakes deep-tech environment where hardware must be engineered to survive the extremes of space.
Nice-to-Have
● Direct experience designing space optical payloads or satellite optomechanical hardware.
● Familiarity with environmental qualification testing standards (e.g., random vibration, shock, thermal-vacuum cycling).
● Knowledge of space-grade materials selection, outgassing considerations, and CTE-matching strategies.
What We Offer
● Opportunity to have a direct, outsized impact by building core optomechanical systems for next-generation space optical communications from the ground up.
● Significant equity ownership (ESOPs) with massive early-stage upside potential.
● A highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment working alongside top-tier experts in optics, electronics, software, and aerospace engineering.
