Network Automation Engineer SolarWinds Specialist

Role Overview

We are seeking a Network Automation Engineer with deep SolarWinds expertise to modernize and automate the management of our existing production network infrastructure.

In this role, you will move beyond basic monitoring to unlock the full automation, orchestration, and configuration management capabilities of the SolarWinds platform.

Your mission will be to eliminate manual workflows by leveraging SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager (NCM), Orion SDK/SolarWinds Information Service (SWIS), APIs, and scripting to build a highly automated, self-healing, and compliant network environment.

Key Responsibilities

1. SolarWinds Automation & Orchestration

- Design, implement, and maintain advanced automation workflows primarily using SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager (NCM) and Orion SDK/SolarWinds Information Service (SWIS).
- Develop custom Python, PowerShell, or Ansible scripts that interface with the SolarWinds API to automate routine provisioning, patching, and configuration tasks.
- Build automated compliance reports and remediation scripts within NCM to automatically correct policy violations across multi-vendor network devices.
- Automate repetitive network administration and configuration activities while maintaining appropriate production controls.

1. Legacy Network Modernization & Remediation

- Audit existing manual network processes and translate them into automated SolarWinds alerting actions, scripts, and job schedules where appropriate.
- Leverage SolarWinds alerting engines to trigger automated troubleshooting and self-healing scripts, such as auto-remediating interface flaps or routing anomalies.
- Maintain gold-standard configuration templates within SolarWinds to ensure consistency across routers, switches, and firewalls.
- Identify opportunities to replace manual operational processes with repeatable and controlled automation.

1. Integration & Telemetry Expansion

- Integrate SolarWinds with external IT Service Management (ITSM) systems such as ServiceNow or Jira to automate ticket creation, updating, and closure based on network events.




- Connect SolarWinds with IPAM and database systems to automate subnet allocations and inventory tracking.
- Customize SolarWinds dashboards, PerfStack, and NetPath to provide real-time visibility into complex network paths and performance metrics.
- Develop and maintain integrations using REST/SOAP APIs and process JSON/XML data.

1. Governance & Training

- Manage the health, scaling, and polling efficiency of the SolarWinds infrastructure, including Additional Polling Engines and SQL database optimization for monitoring data.
- Act as the internal SolarWinds SME, supporting and training traditional network engineers on how to safely utilize SolarWinds automation capabilities.
- Document automation intents, workflows, codebases, standard operating procedures, expected results, validation processes, and error handling.
- Ensure automated production changes follow appropriate validation, change-management, and rollback procedures.

Required Technical Skills

SolarWinds

- Deep hands-on experience with the SolarWinds Orion suite.
- Strong experience with SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager (NCM).
- Experience with Network Performance Monitor (NPM) and NetFlow Traffic Analyzer (NTA).
- Experience with SolarWinds alerting, configuration templates, compliance policies, reporting, and automation workflows.

API & Automation
- Strong proficiency with the SolarWinds API / Orion SDK / SWIS.
- Hands-on experience with SwisPowerShell and/or the OrionSDK Python library.
- Strong scripting experience using Python and/or PowerShell.
- Experience with Ansible is preferred.
- Ability to develop scripts that extract data from SolarWinds and/or push configuration changes.

Network Engineering Strong foundational knowledge of traditional networking, including:
- TCP/IP
- Switching and VLANs
- Routing
- BGP and OSPF
- Firewalls and network security
- Multi-vendor network environments
- Cisco, Aruba, NetScaler,



or similar networking technologies

Systems Integration
- Experience working with REST/SOAP APIs.
- Robust understanding of JSON and XML data formats.
- Experience integrating network monitoring/automation platforms with external systems such as ServiceNow, Jira, IPAM, or databases.

Database & Reporting
- Working knowledge of SQL and SWQL (SolarWinds Query Language).
- Experience creating custom SolarWinds reports, queries, dashboards, and data extractions.
- Understanding of SolarWinds SQL database and monitoring-data management is preferred.

Experience & Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in Network Engineering, with at least 1+ year of hands-on experience managing and automating networks using SolarWinds.
- Strong hands-on experience with SolarWinds NCM and SolarWinds API/SWIS/Orion SDK is required.
- Experience developing automation using Python, PowerShell, or Ansible.
- Strong understanding of enterprise network infrastructure and multi-vendor environments.
- Experience working with production networks and implementing controlled automation.
- Ability to analyze manual troubleshooting and operational processes and translate them into programmatic automation workflows.
- Strong understanding of risk management, validation, testing, change control, and rollback planning when deploying automation in production.
