Job Summary

AI is a top strategic priority for New Relic, and the Bengaluru design team is at the center of it. The team works across three closely related product clusters: autonomous incident response (SRE Agent, Autopilot, and Intelligent RCA), the intelligence and platform layer that powers them (Ground Truth, Agentic Platform, and New Relic AI), and AIOps for event correlation and incident management.

These products share a common design challenge: users need to trust systems that act autonomously, and building that trust through good design is genuinely hard work.

This is an on-site role in Bengaluru. Your designers are there, and many of your engineering and product partners are too. Being present - in standups, reviews, and the quick conversations before a decision gets made - is part of how youll build the relationships that make design effective. Youll also collaborate with design, product, and engineering partners in the US and Spain, so operating across time zones and communicating well in writing are part of the job.

Youll manage a small team of designers and own the quality of the work across these products. The design questions here dont have established answers - how do you make an autonomous system legible How do you build user trust in AI-generated root cause analysis How do you design a handoff from machine decision to human judgment If youre already working in AI product design, or actively building toward it, and you want to lead a team on problems where the playbook doesnt exist yet, this is that role.

Responsibilities

- Manage and develop your designers - run consistent 1:1s including regular career development conversations, give direct and specific feedback, set clear expectations for each person, and invest in their growth. Build a team culture where people feel they belong and different perspectives are welcome. Youll represent your team in calibration conversations and advocate for their work and careers within the broader design org.
- Own design quality across AI Products - review work critically, raise problems before they reach partners, and make sure the team is solving the right problems at the right level of craft. For these products, that means consistently asking: does this design make the system legible Does it earn trust or just assert it




- Keep the users perspective in the conversation - design managers at New Relic are the voice of the user in product and engineering discussions. For AI products, that means bringing user research and real-world usage patterns into roadmap conversations, and pushing back when a feature optimizes for the AIs capability rather than the users understanding of it.
- Partner with PM and Engineering - work with your product and engineering counterparts as a peer. Hold the design perspective, push back when the direction needs it, and communicate designs value in terms the business tracks: adoption, incident resolution time, customer retention.
- Keep the team focused and on track - manage incoming work, maintain visibility into whats in flight, help the team balance competing priorities, and set clear expectations with PM and Engineering partners about whats possible and when.
- Help your team design for AI well - bring a genuine point of view on AI interaction design: trust, transparency, human-in-the-loop moments, designing for systems that act before the user asks. Use AI tools actively in your own workflow - Figma AI, Claude, Gemini, and others - and help your team develop theirs for faster prototyping, better research synthesis, and exploring directions that would take weeks with traditional tools.
- Contribute IC design work when the work calls for it - youre an experienced designer, and these products are complex enough that there will be moments where the team needs your hands on a problem. Roll up your sleeves when its the right call; delegate when it isnt.
- Hire well - contribute to recruiting when the team has open roles. Use each hire to bring in diverse perspectives and backgrounds, and build the kind of team where different viewpoints make the work better.
- Connect Bengaluru to the rest of the design org - bridge your team to design, product, and engineering partners in the US and Spain. Apply Recent Relics design standards and practices locally, and make sure your team isnt developing in isolation from the broader design org direction.

Requirements





- 8+ years of product design experience, with meaningful time on technically complex B2B or enterprise software - products with real technical users and high stakes in production
- 2-4 years of direct people management - youve run 1:1s, given honest performance feedback, and developed designers at different career stages
- Genuine curiosity about AI product design - ideally youre already working in this space. You have a developing point of view on trust, transparency, and human-in-the-loop design, and you can evaluate whether a design makes an autonomous system legible and trustworthy. Youre not afraid to roll up your sleeves and contribute design work on problems where the answers arent settled
- Experience working in ambiguity - defining problems and shipping to learn, not waiting for a complete brief before starting
- Experience working across time zones - comfortable with async communication and able to build real working relationships with partners you wont always see in person
- A clear design point of view and the confidence to use it - you can evaluate work, give specific feedback, and hold a position with a PM or engineering partner who pushes back
- Strong written and verbal communication in English - this is a distributed org and clear communication is how work stays connected across it
- Comfort working in code-adjacent tools - the AI products team works actively in Claude Code and VS Code, and youll need to be able to engage with the work and evaluate it at that level
- A portfolio showing your design process and how you reason through hard problems - not just finished screens, but how you think and what tradeoffs you made

Bonus points

- Hands-on experience designing AI-native products - agentic workflows, autonomous systems, AI confidence visualization, human-in-the-loop flows, or building user trust in AI-generated outputs
- Experience with observability, incident response, or developer-facing infrastructure products
- Familiarity with design systems and when to work within them vs. when to push on them
- Experience hiring and growing a design team over time
