1. Job Purpose The Inward Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring that all incoming raw materials, components, bought-out parts, and subcontracted components conform to specified drawings, specifications, standards, and customer requirements before they are released for production.
The role involves incoming inspection, supplier quality monitoring, identification and control of non-conforming materials, documentation, and coordination with Purchase, Stores, Production, and suppliers to maintain consistent incoming quality.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Incoming Material Inspection
- Inspect incoming raw materials, components, bought-out parts, and subcontracted components as per approved inspection standards.
- Verify material dimensions, specifications, grades, surface condition, and other applicable quality parameters.
- Perform inspection using instruments such as:
- Vernier Caliper
- Micrometer
- Height Gauge
- Dial Gauge
- Bore Gauge / Air Gauge
- Hardness Tester
- Thread Gauges
- Plug / Ring Gauges
- Other applicable measuring instruments.
- Verify material certificates, inspection reports, test certificates, and other supplier documents wherever applicable.
- Ensure inspection is carried out as per drawing, control plan, inspection standards, and sampling plan.
- Identify and segregate accepted, rejected, and hold materials.
B. Drawing & Specification Verification
- Read and understand engineering drawings, specifications, GD&T;, and applicable quality requirements.
- Verify critical dimensions and characteristics against approved drawings.
- Ensure revision status of drawings and specifications is properly maintained.
- Identify critical-to-quality characteristics and ensure appropriate inspection methods are followed.
C. Non-Conforming Material Control
- Identify and document incoming material non-conformities.
- Prepare NCR (Non-Conformance Report) for rejected materials.
- Ensure proper identification and physical segregation of rejected / suspect materials.
- Coordinate with Purchase and suppliers for replacement, rework, sorting, or disposition of rejected material.
- Maintain records of rejection, rework, deviation, and supplier-related quality issues.
- Ensure rejected material is not inadvertently released for production.
D. Supplier Quality Coordination
- Communicate supplier quality issues to the concerned suppliers through the Purchase / Supplier Quality team.
- Follow up with suppliers for corrective and preventive actions.
- Review supplier corrective action reports and verify effectiveness.
- Support supplier development and improvement activities.
- Monitor recurring supplier quality problems and initiate corrective actions.
- Participate in supplier audits, supplier visits, and process improvement activities whenever required.
E. Quality Documentation
- Maintain incoming inspection reports and quality records.
- Maintain supplier rejection and defect records.
- Prepare and maintain inspection reports, NCRs, deviation reports, and supplier corrective action records.
- Maintain records related to material certificates and test certificates.
- Ensure traceability of incoming materials from receipt to inspection and release.
- Support preparation and maintenance of quality-related MIS reports.
F. Inspection Planning & Process Control
- Follow approved Incoming Quality Control (IQC) procedures.
- Develop / update inspection standards and check sheets wherever required.
- Define appropriate inspection methods and frequencies based on material criticality.
- Ensure measuring instruments used for inspection are calibrated and within validity.
- Follow sampling inspection requirements as defined by the organization.
- Support implementation of quality control plans and inspection standards.
G. Supplier Performance Monitoring
- Monitor supplier rejection and defect trends.
- Prepare supplier-wise quality performance reports.
- Track PPM, rejection %, line rejection, repeat defects, and corrective action closure.
- Identify suppliers / parts with recurring quality issues and escalate them appropriately.
- Support supplier performance improvement initiatives.
H. Cross-Functional Coordination
- Coordinate with Stores, Purchase, Production, Quality, Engineering, and Maintenance departments regarding incoming material quality.
- Provide quality clearance for materials before production use.
- Support Production in resolving material-related quality issues.
- Ensure effective communication of quality alerts and supplier-related issues to concerned departments.
3. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) The performance of the Inward Quality Engineer may be evaluated based on:
- Incoming material rejection percentage.
- Supplier PPM.
- Number of repeated supplier defects.
- Incoming inspection turnaround time.
- Accuracy of inspection and documentation.
- Timely closure of supplier corrective actions.
- Reduction in line rejection due to incoming material.
- Compliance with inspection plans and procedures.
- Calibration compliance of measuring instruments.
- Timely segregation and disposition of rejected materials.
- Supplier quality improvement.
4. Required Technical Skills
- Good knowledge of automobile / automotive component manufacturing processes.
- Good knowledge of incoming quality inspection procedures.
- Ability to read engineering drawings and GD&T.;
- Knowledge of dimensional inspection techniques.
- Knowledge of measuring instruments and gauges.
- Knowledge of material specifications and inspection standards.
- Knowledge of 7 QC Tools.
- Basic knowledge of SPC and process capability.
- Knowledge of Root Cause Analysis techniques such as:
- 5 Why Analysis
- Fishbone / Ishikawa Diagram
- 8D Problem Solving
- CAPA
- Knowledge of MSA / Gauge R&R; is an added advantage.
- Knowledge of Control Plan, PFMEA, and inspection standards.
- Basic knowledge of ISO 9001 / IATF 16949 requirements is preferred.

6. Educational Qualification Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Production Engineering
- Automobile Engineering
- Industrial Engineering
Relevant experience in automotive component manufacturing / machining / fabrication / forging / casting / sheet metal / bought-out components will be preferred. 7. Experience
2–5 years of relevant experience in:
- Incoming Quality Inspection
- Supplier Quality
- Automotive Component Manufacturing
- Machining / CNC / VMC / Grinding
- Bought-out Component Inspection
- Raw Material Inspection
Candidates with hands-on experience in CNC, VMC, grinding, forging, casting, sheet metal, or other automotive manufacturing processes will be preferred. 8. Authority & Responsibility The Inward Quality Engineer shall have the authority and responsibility to:
- Hold / reject incoming materials that do not meet specified requirements.
- Prevent non-conforming materials from being issued to production.
- Initiate NCRs for supplier-related quality issues.
- Escalate critical and recurring quality problems to the Quality Manager.
- Recommend supplier corrective actions for recurring defects.
- Ensure compliance with approved inspection standards and procedures.
9. Job Summary The Inward Quality Engineer plays a key role in ensuring that only conforming raw materials and components enter the manufacturing process. The position requires strong knowledge of inspection techniques, engineering drawings, measuring instruments, supplier quality management, and problem-solving methodologies. The engineer is expected to work closely with suppliers and internal departments to reduce incoming defects and continuously improve supplier quality. Pay: ₹20,000.00 - ₹25,000.00 per month
