Key Roles & Responsibilities

- Develop, implement and monitor the hospital's Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) programme in coordination with the Infection Control Committee.

- Conduct regular infection control surveillance across clinical, diagnostic, support and patient-care areas.

- Monitor and document Hospital-Acquired Infections (HAIs) and maintain appropriate infection surveillance records.

- Monitor device-associated infections, including CAUTI, CLABSI, VAP and other applicable healthcare-associated infections.

- Monitor compliance with hand hygiene practices among doctors, nurses, technicians, housekeeping staff and other healthcare workers.

- Conduct regular hand hygiene audits and prepare reports with corrective and preventive action plans.

- Monitor compliance with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage according to the level of infection risk and procedure.

- Conduct regular infection control rounds in wards, ICU, OT, emergency, laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, CSSD, housekeeping and other relevant areas.

- Identify infection control gaps during rounds and coordinate with concerned HODs for corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).

- Monitor compliance with Biomedical Waste Management Rules and hospital biomedical waste segregation, storage and disposal practices.

- Coordinate with the CSSD to monitor sterilization, disinfection, storage and distribution practices.

- Monitor and audit OT infection prevention practices, including surgical site infection prevention measures.

- Participate in Surgical Site Infection (SSI) surveillance and support investigation of identified infection trends.

- Monitor environmental hygiene and cleaning practices in patient-care and high-risk areas.

- Coordinate with the housekeeping department to ensure appropriate cleaning, disinfection and terminal cleaning practices.

- Monitor the appropriate use, dilution, labelling and storage of disinfectants and cleaning agents.

- Coordinate with the laboratory for microbiological surveillance, culture reports and infection trend analysis.

- Maintain coordination with the Microbiology Department regarding infection surveillance, antimicrobial resistance and outbreak investigations.

- Monitor and report trends related to Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in coordination with the microbiology and clinical teams.

- Support implementation and monitoring of the hospital's Antimicrobial Stewardship Programme (ASP), wherever applicable.

- Assist in the identification,



investigation and control of infection outbreaks within the hospital.

- Participate in outbreak investigation, including identification of suspected cases, possible sources, transmission routes and necessary control measures.

- Ensure appropriate isolation precautions for patients with communicable or suspected infectious diseases.

- Monitor availability and appropriate use of isolation facilities, signage and PPE.

- Monitor compliance with standard precautions and transmission-based precautions.

- Conduct regular audits of injection safety, medication preparation areas and aseptic practices.

- Monitor safe practices related to sharps handling and prevention of needle-stick injuries.

- Maintain records of occupational exposure incidents, including needle-stick injuries and blood/body-fluid exposures.

- Coordinate appropriate post-exposure management and documentation for healthcare workers following occupational exposure.

- Conduct infection control training and awareness programmes for employees, interns, students and other healthcare workers.

- Provide induction training on infection prevention and control practices to newly joined employees.

- Conduct periodic competency-based training on hand hygiene, PPE, biomedical waste management, isolation precautions and other IPC practices.

- Maintain records of all infection control training, attendance, assessments and competency evaluations.

- Participate in preparation, review and implementation of Infection Control Committee agendas, minutes and action plans.

- Prepare periodic infection control reports and dashboards for review by the Infection Control Committee and hospital management.

- Analyse infection surveillance data and identify trends, deviations and areas requiring improvement.

- Maintain appropriate documentation and evidence required for NABH accreditation and surveillance assessments.

- Support the laboratory and clinical departments in maintaining infection control practices relevant to NABL requirements, particularly where patient safety, specimen handling and laboratory biosafety are concerned.

- Ensure proper practices for collection,



transportation and handling of clinical specimens in coordination with concerned departments and the laboratory.

- Monitor compliance with laboratory-related infection prevention and biosafety practices in coordination with the laboratory team.

- Participate in quality improvement projects related to infection prevention, patient safety and healthcare-associated infections.

- Assist in developing and reviewing infection control policies, protocols, checklists and audit formats.

- Ensure infection control policies and guidelines are communicated effectively to all relevant departments.

- Participate in mock drills and emergency preparedness activities related to infection outbreaks and biological hazards.

- Monitor infection control practices during invasive procedures and high-risk clinical activities.

- Conduct periodic audits of urinary catheter care, central line care, ventilator care and other device-related practices, wherever applicable.

- Coordinate with nursing, medical, housekeeping, CSSD, laboratory and other departments to ensure effective implementation of IPC measures.

- Report significant infection control incidents, non-compliances and identified risks to the appropriate authority without delay.

- Ensure timely implementation and follow-up of corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) arising from audits, surveillance and infection control incidents.

- Maintain confidentiality and integrity of patient, employee and infection surveillance data.

- Maintain all infection control records in an organized manner and ensure their availability for internal and external audits.

- Participate in NABH/NABL internal audits, external assessments and accreditation-related activities as required.

- Ensure that infection control-related indicators are monitored, documented and reviewed at defined intervals.

- Promote a culture of infection prevention, patient safety, hand hygiene and standard precautions throughout the hospital.

- Perform any other infection prevention, quality or patient-safety-related responsibilities assigned by the Infection Control Officer, Medical Director or Hospital Management.
