Staff Engineer – HTML5 Video Playback Prototyping

About the Role

We are looking for a highly experienced Staff Engineer – HTML5 Video Playback to join our Player Engineering team. This role will focus on designing, prototyping and evaluating advanced browser-based video playback solutions for DAZN’s streaming platform.

You will work closely with video specialists, subject matter experts and engineering teams to solve complex streaming challenges involving HTML5 Video, Media Source Extensions (MSE), DRM/EME, Adaptive Bitrate Streaming (ABR), network performance and playback resiliency.

As a Staff Engineer, you will provide technical leadership without direct authority, mentor engineers and influence the technical direction of web playback across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

- Design and prototype advanced HTML5-based video playback solutions across web platforms.
- Develop improvements to network handling, ABR algorithms and playback resiliency.
- Build and evaluate solutions using Media Source Extensions (MSE) and Encrypted Media Extensions (EME).
- Experiment with improvements to video playback quality and user experience across different browsers and devices.
- Act as the primary technical point of contact for current web playback initiatives.
- Design and evolve reusable SDKs, APIs and platform components consumed by multiple engineering teams.
- Troubleshoot and debug complex production playback issues across browsers, devices and web architectures.
- Improve performance, reliability and cross-browser compatibility.
- Contribute to DAZN's engineering standards, architecture and technical integrations.
- Work horizontally across Streaming & Broadcasting teams on cross-domain initiatives.




- Mentor engineers and promote engineering excellence and continuous improvement.

Required Experience & Skills
- Strong professional software engineering experience with a proven record of delivering complex technical solutions.
- Deep expertise in HTML5 video playback and browser media pipelines.
- Strong hands-on experience with MSE (Media Source Extensions).
- Experience with EME (Encrypted Media Extensions) and DRM-protected video playback.
- Strong JavaScript and/or TypeScript development experience.
- Strong understanding of Adaptive Bitrate Streaming (ABR) and streaming protocols.
- Experience diagnosing network, buffering, latency and playback resiliency problems.
- Strong understanding of browser performance optimisation and cross-browser compatibility.
- Experience designing or developing SDKs, APIs or platform components used across multiple products or engineering teams.
- Ability to independently lead technical initiatives and work across multiple engineering teams.
- Strong debugging, analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

Good to Have
- Experience with DASH / MPEG-DASH and HLS.
- Experience with commercial or open-source web players such as Shaka Player, dash.js or hls.js.
- Knowledge of Widevine, PlayReady and FairPlay DRM.
- Experience with CDN/network optimisation and video delivery.
- Knowledge of video codecs, manifests, segments and browser decoding pipelines.
- Experience working on large-scale OTT, live streaming or sports streaming platforms.
- Previous experience in player prototyping, video R&D; or streaming engineering.

What We're Looking For A hands-on Staff Engineer who can go considerably deeper than standard frontend development. The ideal candidate understands what happens between the network, browser, MSE/EME and the video element, and can prototype solutions to improve playback quality at scale.
