Position: General Manager Garment Manufacturing Unit
Location: Tirupur
Reporting To: Managing Director
Industry: Knit Garments / Apparel Manufacturing
Role Purpose The General Manager will provide end-to-end leadership for a garment manufacturing unit, with full accountability for commercial operations, supply chain, production, quality, systems, people management, and financial performance.
This role requires a hands-on, commercially astute leader capable of integrating operations with strong financial discipline and systems thinking to ensure sustainable profitability, operational excellence, and high customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
1. Customer & Commercial Management
- Act as the primary interface with customers for order planning, confirmations, delivery schedules, and ongoing coordination
- Prepare style-wise costing, quotations, and lead price negotiations aligned with business objectives
- Ensure all orders are accepted with clear margin visibility and delivery feasibility
- Build and maintain strong customer relationships while managing expectations on quality, cost, and timelines
2. Costing, Pricing & Margin Management
- Establish and maintain robust standard costing systems
- Monitor order-wise contribution and unit-level profitability
- Review actual performance against standards and drive continuous improvement initiatives
- Provide periodic profitability analysis and strategic recommendations to management
3. Supply Chain & Vendor Management
- Plan and coordinate sourcing across the complete value chain:
- Yarn
- Knitting
- Dyeing
- Printing
- Embroidery
- Trims and accessories
- Identify, evaluate, develop, and manage vendors for cost, quality, and delivery reliability
- Ensure optimal inventory levels and uninterrupted material availability
4. Production & Factory Operations
- Lead factory operations through the Factory Manager and production leadership teams
- Drive efficiency through production planning,
line balancing, and effective capacity utilization
- Ensure timely execution aligned with confirmed customer orders
- Implement preventive maintenance programs and operational best practices
5. Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Ensure adherence to customer quality standards and compliance requirements
- Strengthen inline and end-line quality systems in coordination with QA teams
- Review quality performance and lead corrective and preventive actions
- Support customer audits, compliance reviews, and factory visits
6. Inventory, Stores & Material Control
- Oversee stores operations covering raw materials, WIP, and finished goods
- Ensure accurate inventory records, system integrity, and periodic physical verification
- Monitor stock ageing and drive inventory optimization initiatives
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure data accuracy and transparency
7. Finance, MIS & Performance Reporting
- Work in close coordination with the Accounts team to ensure:
- Timely MIS and management reports
- Monthly financial statements
- Cost and variance analysis
- Participate actively in budgeting, forecasting, and working capital management
- Present operational and financial performance reviews to senior management
8. ERP & Systems Implementation
- Lead and support ERP implementation, stabilization, and continuous improvement
- Ensure end-to-end process integration across production, quality, stores, and finance
- Drive system adoption, discipline, and real-time data accuracy across teams
9. People Management & Leadership
- Build, lead,
and mentor cross-functional teams across Production, Quality, Stores, and Support functions
- Establish clear reporting structures, accountability, and performance management systems
- Lead recruitment, training, and development of key personnel
- Foster a disciplined, team-oriented, and performance-oriented work culture
10. Unit-Level Financial Responsibility
- Own the overall operational and financial performance of the manufacturing unit
- Drive productivity improvement, cost optimization, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Ensure strong alignment between operational execution and financial outcomes
Candidate Profile Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum 18+ years of experience in garment/apparel manufacturing
- Strong exposure to operations, costing, supply chain, and quality management
- Proven experience managing customer interactions and vendor ecosystems
- Prior responsibility for unit-level performance or P&L; ownership preferred
