Freelance Associates: OHS, Process Safety, Electrical Safety & Fire Safety

Preferred base location: Mumbai/Pune/Nagpur/Ahmedabad/Delhi NCR/Bangalore/Chennai

Flexible associate engagement for experienced safety professionals who can deliver high-quality client assignments and represent BSC India professionally.

About the opportunity:

British Safety Council India is expanding its network of freelance associates to support the delivery of auditing, consultancy and training assignments across India. We invite experienced professionals with demonstrable expertise in one or more of the following domains: General Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), Process Safety Management (PSM), Fire & Life Safety and Electrical Safety.

Associates will be engaged on an assignment-by-assignment basis, subject to business needs, technical evaluation, availability, location, client requirements and successful completion of BSC onboarding and standardisation processes. This is not a full time employment position and does not guarantee a minimum volume of work.

The associate mandate:

To deliver technically robust, practical and client-focused audit, consultancy and training services in accordance with BSC methodologies, quality standards and agreed project scope. Associates are expected to combine deep subject-matter expertise with strong facilitation, report writing and stakeholder-management capability.

Key responsibilities:

- Deliver on-site, remote or blended audits, assessments, gap analyses, maturity reviews, compliance reviews and diagnostic assignments within the approved area of competence.
- Provide consultancy support, including management-system design and improvement, risk-control enhancement, action planning, implementation support and technical advisory.
- Deliver engaging classroom, virtual and workplace-based training, workshops, coaching sessions and client briefings using approved or agreed learning materials. This includes accredited courses by NEBOSH, IOSH and ISEP.
- Prepare clear, evidence-based reports, presentations and recommendations that are proportionate to risk, commercially aware and actionable for client leadership teams.
- Plan assignments effectively, validate scope and information requirements, conduct opening and closing meetings, manage site interfaces and complete deliverables within agreed timelines.
- Apply relevant Indian legal requirements, recognised international standards, industry good practice and BSC protocols.
- Maintain independence, professional judgement, confidentiality, data security and ethical conduct, and promptly disclose any conflict of interest.
- Participate in BSC induction, calibration, standardisation, observed delivery, quality-assurance reviews and continuing professional development activities.
- Address technical-review feedback and, where required, support root-cause analysis and corrective action relating to complaints, appeals or delivery-quality concerns.
- Maintain accurate assignment records, evidence, time and expense documentation, and use designated systems and templates.
- Travel across India, sometimes at short notice, subject to mutually agreed assignment requirements.

Indicative scope by domain:

General OHS:

- OHS Management System development, implementation & auditing.
- Risk management, contractor safety, incident investigation, permits to work, emergency preparedness, behavioural safety, safety culture and leadership interventions.
- OHS strategy, governance, performance improvement, implementation support and capability-building programmes.

Process Safety Management:

- PSM framework, maturity and element-based assessments; implementation and improvement support.
- Process hazard analysis and risk studies such as HAZID, HAZOP, What-if, LOPA or equivalent methodologies, subject to demonstrated competence.
- Management of change, asset integrity, mechanical integrity, operating procedures, safe operating limits, process safety performance indicators, incident learning, and emergency management.
- PSM training, leadership workshops, practitioner development, and workforce awareness programmes.

Electrical Safety:

- Systematic electrical safety audits identify unsafe conditions and practices, assess risk,



determine root causes and provide practical corrective actions.
- Review of SLDs, electrical drawings, maintenance records, test certificates, statutory inspection reports, permits, LOTO procedures and accident/incident records.
- Familiar with appropriate calibrated testing instruments and interpretation of test results.
- HT/LT panels, transformers, DG sets, earthing, electrical protection, cables, motors and industrial installations.

Fire & Life Safety:

- Fire risk assessments, code-compliance reviews, emergency preparedness and evacuation assessments, and fire-safety management-system evaluations.
- Review of fire-prevention and protection arrangements, system design intent, inspection, testing, maintenance and management controls.
- Application of relevant NBC, NFPA and other recognised requirements, as applicable to the assignment.
- Fire safety, emergency response, evacuation, fire warden and management-awareness training.

Common eligibility and capabilities:

- Typically, 10+ years of relevant industry, consulting, auditing or leadership experience, with depth appropriate to the assignments sought. More senior or specialist assignments may require additional experience.
- Proven track record in independently delivering audits, consultancy and/or professional training to corporate or industrial clients.
- Strong written and verbal English communication, facilitation, influencing, presentation and report-writing skills. Additional Indian languages are advantageous.
- Ability to engage credibly with senior leaders, line management, technical specialists, workers and contractors.
- Sound analytical judgement, attention to detail, planning discipline, customer focus and the ability to translate findings into practical improvements.
- Competence in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and virtual delivery platforms, with reliable access to the technology required for independent professional work.
- Willingness and ability to travel and work at industrial, infrastructure, construction or project locations across India, with appropriate personal fitness and site readiness.
- Valid professional registrations, certifications, licences or memberships relevant to the services offered, where applicable.
- Current CPD records and willingness to provide qualification, experience and assignment evidence for technical approval.

Domain-specific qualifications and experience:

Applicants may qualify in one or more domains. Please clearly identify the domain(s) for which you wish to be considered and provide supporting evidence.

1. General OHS

- Degree or diploma in engineering, science, occupational safety and health, or a related discipline.
- NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, recognised Advanced Diploma in Industrial Safety, or an equivalent higher-level OHS qualification.
- Typically 10+ years of relevant experience in occupational health and safety management systems. Senior assignments may require 12-15 years.
- Demonstrable knowledge and application of Indian OHS legislation and ISO 45001 or comparable OHS management-system standards.
- A recognised lead auditor qualification and credible audit experience are strongly preferred.
- Relevant trainer, facilitation or adult-learning qualification, together with evidence of successful professional training delivery, is desirable.
- Experience in behavioural safety, safety culture, wellbeing, contractor management or high-risk industries is advantageous.

2. Process Safety Management

- Degree in chemical, process, mechanical, instrumentation, petroleum, fire or another relevant engineering/technical discipline.
- Typically, 10+ years of relevant experience in process industries, including substantial hands-on exposure to PSM implementation, operations, engineering, assurance, or consulting.



Senior assignments may require 12-15 years.
- Demonstrable competence across recognised PSM elements and methodologies, supported by assignment evidence.
- Formal training and facilitation experience in relevant techniques such as HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA, process hazard analysis, management of change, asset integrity or incident investigation, as applicable to the services offered.
- NEBOSH Diploma, Advanced Diploma in Industrial Safety, process-safety qualification, functional-safety credential or equivalent is advantageous, depending on specialist scope.
- Experience in chemicals, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, paints, energy, metals or other major hazard/process industries is strongly preferred.

3. Fire & Life Safety

- Degree in Fire Engineering, Fire & Safety Engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline supported by specialist fire-safety qualifications.
- Typically 10+ years of relevant experience in fire prevention, protection, life safety, emergency management, fire engineering, operations, assurance or consulting. Senior assignments may require 12-15 years.
- Demonstrable competence in fire-risk assessment, fire-safety management and review of active and passive protection arrangements.
- Working knowledge of the National Building Code of India, applicable Indian requirements, relevant NFPA standards and recognised fire/life-safety good practice.
- Relevant professional membership, fire auditor/assessor credentials, lead auditor qualification or specialised fire-protection certification is advantageous.
- Evidence of effective delivery of fire safety, emergency response, evacuation or management training is desirable.

4. Electrical Safety

- Degree in Electrical Engineering from recognized university
- Typically 10+ years of relevant experience in electrical safety auditing/inspection, preferably including HT/LT installations. Senior assignments may require 12-15 years.
- Demonstrated competence in auditing electrical substations, transformers, HT/LT panels, DG/UPS systems, earthing and lightning protection, electrical protection systems, electrical testing and safe working practices.
- Strong working knowledge of CEA Safety Regulations, applicable State Electrical Inspectorate requirements, IS standards, NEC and NBC is essential.
- Experience in electrical safety audits of industrial, commercial and infrastructure facilities is preferred.
- Experience in preparing detailed audit reports, risk-rating findings and recommending technically appropriate corrective actions is essential

Engagement and selection process

- Profile and document review, followed by a technical discussion & a formal technical evaluation.
- Validation of qualifications, sector experience, references, sample reports and training/facilitation evidence, as applicable.
- Observed / co-delivery before approval for independent assignments.
- Associates will be expected to comply with BSC contractual, confidentiality, safeguarding, information-security, health and safety, quality and brand requirements.
- Empanelment and assignment allocation will depend on approved competence, geography, availability, client fit, commercial terms and ongoing delivery performance.
