Financial Manager / Finance Lead

About the Role
Viva is looking for an experienced Financial Manager / Finance Lead to take ownership of the company's day-to-day finance and accounting operations in India.
The key objective of this role is to bring the existing accounting function into a controlled and transparent state, identify and correct accounting and tax discrepancies, establish robust finance processes and controls, and ensure full and timely compliance with Indian statutory requirements.
This is a highly hands-on role requiring strong knowledge of Indian accounting, taxation, payroll, GST, TDS, statutory compliance, payments and banking operations. The successful candidate should be able to work independently, make sound decisions within their area of responsibility, identify issues proactively and drive their resolution without constant supervision.
The role will also manage and develop a team of two finance employees and assess whether their competencies and responsibilities are aligned with their current positions.
Key Responsibilities
1. Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Take ownership of the company's accounting function and day-to-day finance operations.
- Ensure accurate recording of all business transactions in accordance with applicable Indian accounting requirements.
- Manage the monthly and annual closing process.
- Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, provisions, prepayments, depreciation and other accounting adjustments.
- Perform and review balance sheet reconciliations.
- Maintain accurate AP, AR, GL and statutory liability balances.
- Ensure proper accounting documentation and audit trails.
- Support preparation of management reports and financial information.
2. Payroll & Employee Taxation
- Manage the end-to-end monthly payroll process.
- Ensure accurate calculation of salaries, deductions, employee benefits and statutory contributions.
- Calculate and review employee TDS and ensure timely remittance and reporting.
- Handle new joiners, resignations, salary revisions, bonuses, leave-related adjustments and other payroll changes.
- Ensure proper accounting of payroll and reconciliation of payroll liabilities with the General Ledger.
- Coordinate with HR on payroll inputs and employee tax documentation.
3. Direct & Indirect Tax Compliance Take full operational ownership of the company's recurring tax compliance, including:
- TDS on salary and vendor payments;
- GST computation and compliance;
- GST input tax credit reconciliation;
- Reverse Charge Mechanism, where applicable;
- Corporate income tax and advance tax;
- PF and other applicable statutory contributions.
Responsibilities include:
- determining tax applicability;
- calculating liabilities;
- preparing challans and payment instructions;
- making statutory payments;
- preparing/reviewing tax returns and filings;
- reconciling tax ledgers with statutory portals and accounting records;
- monitoring deadlines;
- identifying tax and compliance risks;
- resolving discrepancies and historical issues.
The candidate must maintain a reliable statutory compliance calendar and ensure that all tax payments and filings are completed accurately and on time. 4. Foreign Remittances
- Manage and review payments to foreign vendors and other overseas counterparties.
- Ensure compliance with applicable Indian tax and foreign remittance requirements.
- Determine withholding tax implications for payments to non-residents.
- Review applicability of DTAA and required supporting documentation.
- Ensure appropriate remittance forms, tax documentation, purpose codes and bank requirements are completed.
- Coordinate with banks and external tax advisors where required.
- Maintain complete supporting documentation for audit and compliance purposes.
5. Accounts Payable & Payment Process
- Own the end-to-end vendor payment process.
- Review invoices and supporting documentation before payment.
- Ensure proper approval, accounting, tax treatment and authorization of payments.
- Establish and maintain appropriate payment controls and segregation of duties.
- Review vendor master data and bank details.
- Manage maker-checker processes for internet banking and corporate payments.
- Ensure payment evidence and supporting documents are properly retained.
- Investigate and resolve payment-related discrepancies.
6. Audit & Statutory Compliance Coordinate statutory, tax and other external audits.
- Prepare audit schedules, reconciliations and supporting documentation.
- Respond to audit queries and coordinate with auditors.
- Track audit adjustments and ensure agreed actions are implemented.
- Ensure timely completion of all statutory reporting and compliance requirements.
- Monitor outstanding audit, tax and regulatory matters.
7. Management Support
- Provide the CFO and management with accurate and timely financial information.
- Proactively identify accounting, tax, compliance and control risks.
- Escalate material issues together with facts, financial impact, risks and proposed solutions.
- Support budgeting, forecasting and other finance initiatives when required.
- Act as the finance owner for operational accounting and statutory matters.
Key Requirements
Skilled experience
- 5+ years of relevant experience in accounting and finance, preferably in local fintech company.
- Strong hands-on experience in Indian accounting and statutory compliance.
- Proven experience independently managing accounting and finance processes.
- Experience with GST, TDS, payroll, PF and corporate income tax compliance.
- Practical experience in preparing tax challans, making statutory payments and completing filings.
- Experience with bank reconciliation, month-end closing and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Hands-on experience with corporate banking and internet banking, including maker-checker payment processes.
- Experience with vendor payments and employee reimbursements.
- Practical experience with foreign remittances / overseas vendor payments will be required.
- Experience working with statutory, IFRS auditors and tax advisors.
- Previous experience managing or supervising junior finance staff.
Technical Knowledge
Strong working knowledge of
- Indian accounting requirements;

- Zoho Books
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or a related field.
- CA / CMA / ACCA / equivalent qualification would be an advantage, but strong practical experience may be considered.
Preferred Background Experience in one or more of the following environments would be an advantage:
- fintech;
- NBFC;
- financial services;
- banking;
- rapidly growing companies with multiple entities;
- companies with significant statutory and tax compliance requirements.
