Job Summary The Echo Technician is responsible for performing echocardiographic examinations as prescribed by the Consultant Cardiologist. The role involves preparing patients, operating echocardiography equipment, acquiring high-quality cardiac images and Doppler measurements, assisting the cardiologist during diagnostic procedures, maintaining equipment and ensuring accurate documentation while following patient-safety and infection-control standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Echocardiography Procedures
- Perform routine echocardiography examinations as instructed by the Consultant Cardiologist.
- Conduct 2D, M-Mode and Doppler echocardiographic studies within the scope of training and authorization.
- Acquire appropriate cardiac views and images according to departmental protocols.
- Obtain required Doppler measurements and cardiac parameters accurately.
- Ensure images are of adequate technical quality for interpretation by the Cardiologist.
- Assist with specialized echocardiographic examinations when trained and authorized.
1. Patient Preparation & Care
- Verify patient identity and examination request before the procedure.
- Explain the procedure to the patient and provide appropriate instructions.
- Prepare the patient and position them correctly for the examination.
- Maintain patient privacy, dignity and confidentiality.
- Provide appropriate assistance to elderly, pediatric, critically ill or physically challenged patients.
- Monitor the patient's condition during the examination and immediately report any significant concerns.
1. Assistance During Cardiac Procedures
- Assist the Cardiologist during procedures such as:
- Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE), where trained and authorized
- Stress Echocardiography
- Contrast Echocardiography
- Bedside/portable echocardiography
- Prepare required equipment, accessories and consumables before procedures.
- Assist with patient positioning and monitoring as directed by the medical team.
- Ensure emergency equipment is readily available for procedures involving higher-risk patients.
1. Equipment Operation & Maintenance
- Operate echocardiography machines safely and efficiently.
- Perform routine equipment checks before starting examinations.
- Ensure transducers/probes and accessories are functioning properly.
- Clean and disinfect equipment according to infection-control protocols.
- Report equipment malfunction promptly to the concerned authority.
- Coordinate with biomedical engineering/service vendors for equipment maintenance and repairs.
- Maintain preventive maintenance and service records as required.
1. Image Quality & Technical Accuracy
- Ensure appropriate patient positioning and probe placement.
- Select suitable imaging and Doppler settings according to the examination.
- Minimize artifacts and obtain technically adequate images.
- Repeat images only when technically necessary.
- Ensure accurate patient and study identification on all stored images.
- Follow departmental protocols for image acquisition and documentation.
1. Infection Prevention & Control
- Follow hospital infection prevention and control policies.
- Perform hand hygiene before and after patient contact.
- Clean and disinfect probes and patient-contact surfaces appropriately.
- Follow appropriate precautions for infectious patients.
- Follow biomedical waste-management procedures where applicable.
- Follow specific disinfection procedures for probes used in specialized examinations such as TEE.
1. Documentation & Records
- Maintain accurate records of all echocardiographic examinations performed.
- Ensure patient details and examination information are entered correctly.
- Maintain procedure registers and daily workload records.
- Ensure images and relevant data are properly stored in the hospital's PACS/RIS or applicable system.
- Maintain equipment and quality-control records as required.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
1. Emergency & Inpatient Services
- Provide bedside echocardiography support for ICU, emergency and inpatient patients when required.
- Respond promptly to urgent requests from the Cardiology/Emergency/ICU team.
- Assist in obtaining emergency cardiac imaging as directed by the Cardiologist.
- Coordinate with nursing and medical teams for safe patient transport and positioning.
1. Quality & NABH Compliance
- Follow hospital policies, SOPs and departmental protocols.
- Maintain compliance with applicable NABH patient-safety and quality requirements.
- Participate in quality audits and departmental quality-improvement activities.
- Maintain required documentation for audits and inspections.
- Participate in training and competency-assessment programmes.
- Report incidents, near misses and equipment-related safety concerns through the appropriate reporting system.
Qualifications
- Diploma / B.Sc. in Cardiac Care Technology, Cardiovascular Technology, Echocardiography Technology or equivalent recognized qualification.
- Additional certification/training in echocardiography is preferred.
- Relevant registration/licensing, wherever applicable.
Required Skills
- Positive knowledge of echocardiography techniques and cardiac anatomy.
- Ability to obtain standard 2D, M-Mode and Doppler views.
- Good understanding of basic cardiac physiology.
- Ability to operate echocardiography equipment effectively.
