About the Role

We are looking for a senior, proactive E/M coding auditor specializing in Gastroenterology and Pulmonology to work with us on a remote freelance basis. This is not a routine chart-checking role. Beyond validating coder output, you will act as a documentation-improvement partner spotting where physician documentation falls short of what was clinically performed, so that the correct, fully supported level of service is captured and reimbursement reflects the actual work done.

The ideal candidate has led coding / audit teams or processes, is comfortable presenting findings directly to clients and providers, and can turn audit results into explicit, actionable feedback.

Key Responsibilities (KRAs)

- Audit coder production for accuracy, completeness, and compliance across GI and Pulmonary E/M encounters (2021+ E/M guidelines, MDM- and time-based leveling).
- Assess coder quality and productivity against agreed accuracy benchmarks and turnaround targets; report scores and trends.
- Review provider documentation to identify gaps, missing elements, and under-documentation that prevent accurate, guideline-supported code capture and lead to under-coding or lost reimbursement.




- Distinguish under-coding from over-coding risk and flag both; ensure every code assigned is supported by documentation and defensible in an audit or payer review.
- Produce clear audit reports with root-cause analysis, error categorization, and prioritized recommendations.
- Deliver constructive, individualized feedback to coders and communicate documentation-improvement opportunities directly to clients and providers.
- Track recurring error patterns and drive corrective-action plans, coder education, and process improvements.
- Stay current with CPT / ICD-10-CM / HCPCS updates, payer-specific rules, and CMS / NCCI guidance relevant to GI and Pulmonary specialties.
- Support denial-trend analysis by linking documentation and coding gaps to downstream denials and revenue leakage.

Required Skills & Qualifications

- 10+ years in medical coding / auditing, with strong GI and Pulmonary E/M expertise.
- Proven process-leadership experience (leading audits, teams, or quality programs) and hands-on client-communication experience.
- Certification such as CPC, CCS, or COC (auditing credential like CPMA preferred).
- Deep command of E/M leveling rules, MDM scoring, and specialty-specific coding nuances.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; able to present findings to both coders and client stakeholders.
- Self-directed and reliable in a remote, deliverable-based engagement.
