We are looking for an experienced and digitally minded Digital News Editor to join our editorial team.

This is a journalism and newsroom position, focused on finding, writing, editing, commissioning and publishing news and editorial content for Eastern Eye’s digital platforms.

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of news journalism, editorial standards, accuracy, fact-checking, headlines, story development and digital publishing. You will work closely with reporters and editors to ensure our journalism is timely, accurate, engaging and relevant to our audience.

Key Responsibilities

Edit and publish daily news and editorial stories across Eastern Eye’s digital platforms.

Work with reporters and contributors to develop and improve news stories.

Identify breaking news, developing stories and relevant issues for our audience.

Write, rewrite and edit copy to a high editorial and journalistic standard.

Create accurate, compelling and appropriate news headlines, standfirsts and introductions.

Fact-check stories, names, dates, figures, quotes and other key information before publication.

Ensure stories meet Eastern Eye’s editorial standards and maintain accuracy, fairness and clarity.

Make editorial decisions about story selection, prioritisation and presentation.

Monitor news developments and identify opportunities for follow-up stories.

Edit copy for grammar, structure, tone, accuracy and readability.





Publish and update stories through the website/content management system.

Work with the wider editorial team on the digital news agenda.

Ensure breaking and developing stories are updated promptly as new information becomes available.

Help develop Eastern Eye’s digital journalism and editorial output.

Requirement

Proven skilled experience as a journalist, news editor, digital journalist, sub-editor or digital news editor.

Experience working in a newsroom, newspaper, magazine or professional news organisation.

Strong news-writing and copy-editing skills.

Excellent knowledge of journalistic principles, editorial standards and fact-checking.

Ability to identify a strong news story and assess its relevance and news value.

Excellent written English and a strong eye for grammar, spelling and detail.

Experience writing and editing headlines for digital news.

Ability to work quickly and accurately under deadline pressure.

Valuable understanding of current affairs and the news cycle.

Experience with digital publishing/wordpress platforms.

Desirable

Experience working for a newspaper or established news publication.

Experience covering UK, British Asian, South Asian or community news.

Knowledge of SEO as it applies to news publishing and editorial content.

Experience with analytics and understanding digital audience behaviour.

Experience commissioning or managing freelance journalists and contributors.
