About The Role

As our first dedicated DevOps engineer, you'll take primary ownership of our infrastructure and delivery processes while continuing to build backend services. This is a hands-on individual contributor role, roughly 70% DevOps and 30% backend engineering, working with our international engineering team.

Your first priority will be to understand our current setup, identify the biggest opportunities, and turn them into a practical improvement roadmap. Datadog is already in place. You'll establish CI/CD and infrastructure as code, and introduce containerization where it adds value. You'll help choose the tools and approach that fit our stage of growth.

Qualifications

We are seeking candidates with over 5 years of experience in DevOps, platform, or backend engineering roles, with substantial hands-on responsibility for production infrastructure. Proven impact through previous work, demonstrating improvements you identified, prioritized, and personally delivered, including results and tradeoffs, is essential. Candidates should possess automation expertise, having built CI/CD pipelines, managed infrastructure as code, and operated containers in production environments using tools such as GitHub Actions, Terraform, Docker, or equivalents.

Strong operational skills in cloud environments, Linux, networking, troubleshooting, monitoring, incident response, infrastructure security, and recovery are required. Additionally, experience with backend development—building and maintaining production services in PHP, Python, or Node.js, along with solid SQL/MySQL skills, including indexing and schema migrations—is necessary. Excellent communication skills are vital for explaining technical decisions, documenting work,



sharing operational knowledge, and collaborating asynchronously across time zones.

Responsibilities

- Choose the right improvements: Assess reliability, security, deployment workflows, and costs. Prioritize changes based on customer impact, risk, and effort, then deliver them effectively.
- Make releases repeatable: Build CI/CD pipelines and reproducible environments, automate manual work, and ensure safer deployments and rollbacks.
- Keep infrastructure reliable and scalable: Own hosting, networking, and capacity planning. Set reliability targets with the team, enhance Datadog alerts, resolve bottlenecks, and control costs.
- Strengthen security and recovery: Improve access controls, secrets management, patching procedures, and establish comprehensive backup, restore, and disaster recovery plans.
- Stay hands-on with the backend: Build secure APIs and services, optimize MySQL performance, and maintain meaningful tests and readable code.
- Build shared operational capability: Document runbooks, share operational knowledge, lead incident investigations, and participate in a shared on-call rotation, including incident response outside working hours.
