Mechanical Design Engineer- Product Development
Department: Mechanical Engineering
Experience: 3-8 Years
Education: B.E./B.Tech/M.Tech Mechanical, Mechatronics, Automotive, Production Engineering, or related fields
About the Role
We are looking for a hands-on Mechanical Design Engineer to work across the complete product development lifecycle for UAVs, UGVs, robotics, and autonomous systems.
You will be involved from requirements and concept development to CAD, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, and production.
We are looking for a product engineer, not just a CAD modellersomeone who understands how a design will function, be manufactured, assembled, tested, and improved in the real world.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Design & Product Development
- Convert product and system requirements into practical mechanical designs.
- Develop concepts and mechanical architectures considering performance, weight, cost, reliability, manufacturability, and complexity.
- Design and integrate chassis, structures, mechanisms, enclosures, mounts, payload systems, and moving assemblies.
- Work with components such as motors, gearboxes, batteries, electronics, sensors, cameras, LiDAR, EO/IR payloads, and actuators.
- Own mechanical components or subsystems from concept to implementation.
- Design with SWaP-C (Size, Weight, Power, and Cost) in mind.
CAD, Drawings & Engineering
- Create detailed 3D models and assemblies using SolidWorks.
- Design sheet-metal parts, weldments, machined components, mechanisms, enclosures, and structural assemblies.
- Prepare production-ready 2D drawings with GD&T;, tolerances, fits, weld symbols, surface finishes, BOMs, and manufacturing notes.
- Perform tolerance stack-ups and engineering calculations for critical designs.
- Support FEA/CAE for structural, thermal, vibration, and other engineering requirements.
- Maintain CAD, drawings, BOMs, revisions,
and engineering documentation.
Prototyping, Testing & Problem Solving
- Build and support full-scale functional prototypes.
- Participate in assembly, integration, commissioning, and hands-on debugging.
- Support mechanical testing including load, endurance, drop, vibration, thermal, environmental, and IP/ingress testing.
- Analyse failures, perform root-cause analysis, and implement design improvements.
- Iterate designs based on prototype, testing, manufacturing, and field feedback.
Manufacturing & Production
- Apply DFM/DFA principles from the early design stage.
- Design for processes such as: CNC machining, turning, laser cutting, sheet-metal bending, welding, casting, injection moulding, composites, and 3D printing.
- Work directly with manufacturing teams and vendors to resolve fabrication, machining, dimensional, assembly, and quality issues.
- Consider manufacturing feasibility, inspection, tooling, assembly sequence, serviceability, and cost.
- Support the transition from R&D; prototype low-volume production mass production.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with R&D;, Electrical/Avionics, Embedded Software, Controls, Manufacturing, Quality, Procurement, and Systems Engineering teams.
- Define and manage mechanical interfaces between different subsystems.
- Participate in design, manufacturing, prototype, and testing reviews.
- Work with external vendors and manufacturing partners to deliver production-ready hardware.
Required Skills
- 3–8 years of experience in mechanical design/product development.
- Strong SolidWorks skills.
- Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals.
- Valuable knowledge of GD&T;, tolerance analysis, fits, clearances, and 2D detailing.
- Practical understanding of sheet metal, weldments, CNC machining, fabrication, fasteners, materials, and mechanical assemblies.
- Hands-on experience with prototyping, assembly, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Understanding of DFM/DFA and design optimisation.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations and make sound design decisions.
- Familiarity with FEA/CAE and interpreting engineering analysis.
- Ability to independently own a mechanical component or subsystem.
- Strong problem-solving and engineering judgement.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced R&D; and product-development environment.
Good to Have Experience in any of the following will be an advantage:
- UGVs / AGVs / UAVs / Drones
- Robotics and autonomous systems
- Defence products
- Automotive / EV
- Mechatronics and mechanisms
- Motors, gearboxes, drivetrains, or suspension
- Composite structures / carbon fibre
- Electronics and ruggedised enclosures
- EO/IR, LiDAR, radar, or other payload integration
- Vibration isolation and thermal management
- IP-rated / environmentally sealed enclosures
- FEA/CAE
- Low-volume or mass production
- PDM/PLM
- New Product Development and product optimisation
Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is someone who can take a problem from requirement concept CAD prototype test manufacturing.
Education
B.E. / B.Tech / M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automotive Engineering, Production Engineering, or a related discipline.
Experience
3–8 years of relevant experience in mechanical design, product development, robotics, automotive, aerospace, defence, UAV/UGV, or related industries.
