We are looking for a Cost Estimation Engineer to support aerospace OEM programs across the complete product lifecycle, from early-stage concept and proposal activities through development, industrialization, and production.
The role will be responsible for developing robust, data-driven cost estimates for aerospace components, assemblies, systems, and programs by working closely with Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain, Procurement, Finance, and Program Management teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop bottom-up, should-cost, parametric, and comparative cost estimates for aerospace components, assemblies, and programs.
- Prepare cost estimates based on engineering drawings, 3D models, Bill of Materials (BOM), specifications, product definitions, and manufacturing/industrial plans.
- Analyze manufacturing processes and estimate material, labor, machining, fabrication, assembly, special processes, tooling, inspection, testing, and overhead costs.
- Develop recurring and non-recurring cost estimates, including development/NRE, tooling, industrialization, qualification, and production costs.
- Support cost estimation for aerospace manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, forging, casting, composites, additive manufacturing, heat treatment, surface treatment, assembly, and special processes.
- Evaluate supplier quotations and benchmark supplier costs against should-cost models, historical data, market intelligence, and internal cost databases.
- Build and maintain cost models, cost breakdown structures, estimation templates, and historical cost databases.
- Perform cost variance, sensitivity, and what-if analysis to understand the impact of design, volume, material, process, and manufacturing assumptions.
- Support Design-to-Cost, Value Engineering, Value Analysis, and cost-reduction initiatives in collaboration with Engineering and Manufacturing teams.
- Work with Engineering teams to identify cost drivers and provide cost inputs during design reviews and product development.
- Support RFQ/RFP, make-versus-buy, sourcing, localization, and new-product introduction activities with reliable cost estimates.
- Establish and maintain labor rates, machine rates, material rates, process rates, overhead assumptions, and productivity/learning-curve factors.
- Analyze the impact of production volumes, manufacturing location, batch size, tooling amortization, scrap/yield, and process maturity on product cost.
- Collaborate with Supply Chain and Procurement teams to validate supplier pricing, sourcing assumptions, and cost breakdowns.
- Partner with Program Management and Finance to support program business cases, cost targets, budgets, forecasts, and cost reviews.
- Continuously improve cost-estimation methodologies using historical data, statistical analysis, automation, and digital tools.
- Develop dashboards and analytical reports to provide cost visibility and actionable insights to program and business leadership.
- Ensure cost estimates are traceable, well documented, and supported by clearly defined assumptions and technical inputs.
Required Qualifications &
Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience in aerospace, aviation, defense, automotive, precision engineering, or high-technology manufacturing environments.
- Robust understanding of engineering drawings, GD&T;, BOMs, manufacturing routings, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience in cost estimation, should-cost analysis, manufacturing costing, product costing, quotation engineering, or industrial engineering.
- Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes and their associated cost drivers.
- Good understanding of material cost, labor cost, machine/hourly rates, tooling, overheads, scrap, yield, setup time, cycle time, and production volumes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work with incomplete or evolving technical information.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Excel, including cost models, pivot tables, lookups, data analysis, and scenario modelling.
- Experience with ERP/MRP, PLM, costing databases, or other engineering/business systems is an advantage.
- Exposure to Python, Power BI, VBA, SQL, or other data-analysis/automation tools will be an added advantage.
- Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to work effectively across Engineering, Manufacturing, Procurement, Supply Chain, Finance, and Program teams.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working on commercial aerospace, military/defense, aircraft engine, aerostructure, aerospace systems, or aircraft component programs.
- Knowledge of aerospace materials and special processes.
- Experience with new product introduction (NPI), industrialization, RFQ/RFP, sourcing, or program cost management.
- Exposure to Design-to-Cost, Value Engineering, Lean Manufacturing, and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Experience developing or improving digital/automated cost-estimation tools and databases.
What You Will Bring The ideal candidate will combine engineering knowledge, manufacturing-process understanding, commercial awareness, and strong analytical capability to translate technical product definitions into reliable cost estimates.
You will work in a cross-functional aerospace environment where cost, technical feasibility, quality, schedule, and manufacturability need to be evaluated together to support effective program and business decisions.
