Job Summary The Biomedical Engineer is responsible for applying engineering principles to the development, evaluation, maintenance, and protected operation of medical technologies and healthcare systems. The role may involve medical devices, biomedical instrumentation, biomaterials, diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, medical imaging systems, and clinical engineering.
Key Responsibilities1. Medical Devices & Equipment
- Design, develop, test, maintain, and troubleshoot medical devices and equipment.
- Evaluate device performance, reliability, safety, and usability.
- Support installation, commissioning, calibration, and validation of medical equipment.
- Assist in equipment selection, procurement, and technology evaluation.
- Coordinate with manufacturers and service providers for technical support and repairs.
1. Biomedical Instrumentation
- Work with sensors, transducers, signal-conditioning systems, data-acquisition systems, and monitoring equipment.
- Maintain and troubleshoot devices such as ECG, EEG, EMG, patient monitors, infusion pumps, and ventilators.
- Perform electrical and functional safety testing.
- Analyze biomedical signals and equipment performance.
1. Medical Imaging
- Support the operation, maintenance, testing, and quality assurance of imaging systems.
- Work with technologies such as:
- X-ray
- CT
- MRI
- Ultrasound
- Nuclear medicine systems
- Assist with image-quality assessments, equipment performance monitoring, and troubleshooting.
- Work with clinical and technical teams to ensure imaging equipment operates safely and effectively.
1. Biomaterials & Biomedical Products
- Assist in the research, development, and evaluation of biomaterials and biomedical products.
- Work with materials used in implants, prosthetics, tissue-engineering applications, and medical devices.
- Evaluate material properties, biocompatibility, durability, and performance.
- Support laboratory testing and documentation of biomedical materials.
1. Clinical Engineering
- Manage biomedical equipment throughout its operational life cycle.
- Develop and implement preventive and corrective maintenance programs.
- Maintain equipment inventories, service records, calibration records, and technical documentation.
- Conduct risk assessments and equipment safety inspections.
- Train healthcare professionals in the safe and effective use of medical equipment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Medical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Master's degree is advantageous for research, product development, imaging, biomaterials, or specialized engineering roles.
- Relevant certifications or training in medical-device technology, clinical engineering, quality systems, or regulatory affairs are beneficial.
