Job Summary

VSA 9 - Staff software engineer (backend) role overview: We are seeking a Senior Staff Backend Engineer to provide technical leadership and drive the architecture of a high-load backend monolith. You will define standards, guide teams, and make critical design decisions across backend systems.

Responsibilities

- Lead architecture design for high-load monolithic backend systems
- Define best practices for C# / .NET, API design, performance, and security
- Drive adoption of AI-assisted engineering practices, including use of coding agents for development and testing
- Define guidelines for safe and effective use of AI-generated code
- Oversee development of REST and SOAP services
- Drive performance tuning and scalability within a monolithic architecture
- Mentor engineers in both core engineering and AI-assisted development practices
- Review system design, code, and database architecture
- Own system reliability, scalability, and resilience
- Partner with product and engineering leadership on technical strategy
- Lead incident analysis and long-term improvements

Requirements

- Deep expertise in C# / .NET ecosystem
- Proven experience working with high-load systems
- Robust knowledge of: REST API design (scalability, versioning, security)
- SOAP / legacy integrations
- Advanced experience with MSSQL: Performance tuning at scale
- Transaction optimization
- Blocking, locking, and concurrency handling
- Strong experience designing and evolving large monolithic systems
- Expertise in performance optimization, concurrency, and fault tolerance
- Deep understanding of application security, including: TLS/SSL,



secure communication, certificate handling
- Secure coding practices
- Common vulnerabilities (OWASP Top 10)
- Threat modeling and mitigation strategies
- Experience identifying and preventing vulnerabilities (injection, auth flaws, data leaks, etc.)
- Strong experience using and evaluating AI development tools and agents: Generating production-quality code and tests
- Reviewing and governing AI output
- Establishing best practices for team adoption
- Strong leadership and mentorship skills

Nice to Have

- Experience with C++
- Experience with Classic ASP and ASP.NET (including legacy systems modernization)
- Experience with Azure Event-driven patterns (within monolith context)
- Observability (logging, tracing, metrics)
- Experience modernizing legacy SOAP/ASP systems
