Role Overview
The POS Platform Engineering & Lab Lead is the single point of accountability for keeping all POS lab environments - development, test, and pre-production - fully operational and available to the teams that depend on them: developers, QA engineers, release managers, and business analysts. The role drives the end-to-end release management process across environment tiers, ensuring every build is promoted, validated, and signed off in a controlled, repeatable way before it reaches live stores. The Lead owns lab uptime, environment fidelity to production, hardware readiness, release pipeline health, data and security compliance, and the smooth flow of work from sprint to store rollout.
Key Responsibilities
- Lab Availability & Uptime: Maintain all lab environments (dev, test, pre-prod) in a fully operational state at all times; proactively resolve outages and communicate availability windows to dependent teams.
- Release Pipeline Management: Own the end-to-end release pipeline across environment tiers - plan, schedule, and execute build promotions from dev through test to pre-production, with documented entry/exit criteria at each gate.
- Release Readiness & Deployment Rehearsals: Stage, deploy, and validate each release candidate in pre-production before production cutover; run deployment rehearsals (mock go-lives), validate install and upgrade scripts, and maintain tested rollback procedures.
- Release Coordination & Communication: Coordinate release schedules with QA leads, development teams, and business stakeholders; publish and maintain a shared release calendar so all teams know when environments are available and what build they are running.
- Environment Build & Version Control: Track and manage setting configuration baselines using version control; ensure every lab tier reflects the correct POS release, base data, and configuration at all times and changes are logged.
- Environment Refresh & Test Data Management: Refresh environments on a scheduled cadence, restore databases to known-good baselines, load and mask realistic test data, and reset state between test cycles so teams always start from a clean, production-like baseline.
- Hardware Procurement & Inventory: Source, track, and maintain physical POS hardware including cash registers, Pin Entry Devices (PEDs), mobile tablets, coin dispensers, and scales; ensure all hardware is certified and production-equivalent.
- Environment Configuration & Parity:
Ensure lab registers run identical software versions, operating systems, and network configurations to what exists in live stores.
- Cross-Functional Coordination: Schedule and manage lab access across QA teams, development sprints, and executive demo teams; prevent conflicts and maintain a lab booking/availability calendar.
- Troubleshooting & Incident Response: Act as the primary point of contact when lab environments, peripherals, or integrations break down; triage, escalate, and resolve issues with a defined SLA to minimize team downtime.
- Network, Connectivity & Integrations: Configure and maintain the lab network and integrations to payment/EFT processors, tax, loyalty, inventory, and middleware systems for end-to-end transaction testing.
- Payment & Peripheral Certification: Maintain PED and payment-terminal firmware, test/sandbox payment credentials, and certify that scanners, printers, scales, cash drawers, and coin dispensers behave as in production.
- Data Security & PCI Compliance: Enforce PCI-DSS and data-handling controls in labs - securing test card and payment data, managing environment access, and ensuring no production cardholder data enters the labs.
- Access & Account Management: Provision and de-provision lab user accounts, register/operator IDs, and role-based permissions for developers, testers, and demo users.
- Monitoring, Backups & Recovery: Monitor lab health and uptime, maintain backups and snapshots of each environment, and rebuild or recover a lab tier quickly after corruption or failure.
- Documentation & Runbooks: Create and maintain setup guides, environment topology diagrams, release runbooks, and knowledge-base articles so labs and release processes can be operated and rebuilt consistently.
- Budget & Cost Tracking: Own the lab budget - capital hardware spend, consumables, and vendor support contracts - and track costs against plan.
- Training & Onboarding: Assist new QA testers and business users on how to operate specialized hardware and software within the lab.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Release management: Proven experience owning a release pipeline across multiple environment tiers (dev test pre-prod production) - including build promotion, deployment rehearsals, go/no-go gates, and rollback planning.
- Environment & lab management: Hands-on experience maintaining multiple concurrent test/staging environments, managing environment baselines, and ensuring environment parity with production.
- POS platform administration: Hands-on experience installing, configuring, patching, and troubleshooting a retail POS system (e.g., Oracle Xstore or equivalent enterprise POS).
- POS hardware and peripherals: Working knowledge of registers, PEDs/payment terminals, receipt printers, scanners, scales, cash drawers, and coin dispensers.
- Networking: Practical understanding of LAN/WAN, TCP/IP, DNS, firewalls, and store-server connectivity sufficient to diagnose lab connectivity issues.
- Operating systems: Comfort administering Windows and/or Linux register and server builds, including imaging and OS-level configuration.
- Databases and scripting: Ability to run SQL queries, restore and refresh databases, and use scripting (shell/PowerShell/batch) to automate environment setup and data resets.
- Payments and PCI awareness: Familiarity with EFT/payment processing flows and PCI-DSS data-handling requirements as they apply to test environments.
- Stakeholder communication: Strong organizational skills to publish release calendars, communicate environment availability, and coordinate across QA, development, and business teams.
- Experience: 8+ years in IT/retail technology roles with at least 3 years in a release management, lab management, or store systems environment role.
Nice to Have
- Hands-on experience with Oracle Xstore/Xcenter administration (installing, patching, and troubleshooting Oracle Retail Xstore Point-of-Service and Xcenter/Xadmin).
Key Performance Indicators
- Lab availability/uptime: Percentage of scheduled lab time all environments are operational and accessible to teams.
- Release on-time delivery: Percentage of releases promoted to pre-production on schedule with all entry/exit criteria met.
- Deployment rehearsal success rate: Percentage of deployment rehearsals completed without blocking issues requiring rescheduling.
- Environment parity: Degree to which dev, test, and pre-prod match the production baseline (version, configuration, data).
- Environment refresh turnaround: Time to refresh or rebuild an environment to a known-good state.
- Incident resolution time: Mean time to restore lab environments and unblock dependent teams after an outage.
- Rollback readiness: 100% of releases entering pre-production have a tested, documented rollback procedure.
- Compliance: Zero PCI/data-handling exceptions and no production cardholder data in the labs.
