About the Role

We are looking for a Technical Lead to own the SpeEdLabs product end to end - a Python/FastAPI backend running large API operations across 30+ product domains over Microsoft SQL Server and MongoDB, and a Vue.js mobile-first application used every day by students, teachers, school administrators and coaching institutes across India.

This is a hands-on role, not a management one. You will spend most of your week writing and reviewing production code. The rest of it goes into raising the bar for a young engineering team - shaping the design before the code gets written, reviewing what the juniors ship, and making sure the architecture holds as the product grows. If you want to keep building while you build a team, this is the seat.

What You’ll Build

● Adaptive practice and assessments - assignments, tests, self-practice and offline OMR-based exams, from design through conduct through auto-evaluation.

● Students’ learning journey insights that turns every question attempt into chapter-, topic- and concept-level mastery signals, and drives what each student sees next.

● An advanced content platform spanning Course → Subject → Chapter → Topic → Concept

→ Question, with AI-assisted authoring, question digitisation from PDFs at scale, lectures,

videos, expansive teaching content libraries, QR codes for smart books.





● AI in production - Google Gemini and OpenAI driving content generation, PDF extraction and automated evaluation, on async batch pipelines rather than toy prompts.

● School and institute operations - Complete LMS, batch management, school health scores,

field-visit, ticketing and reporting workflows for the teams running our on-ground business.

● Live and interactive learning - Zoom classes, live streaming, interactive video authoring,

and a learning bot that reaches students and parents where they already are.

What You’ll Do

● Design and build features end to end - from data model and API contract on the FastAPI backend through to the Vue.js interface the user actually touches.

● Own the data layer: SQLAlchemy models over Microsoft SQL Server and document models over MongoDB, with the judgement to know which data belongs where.

● Write and tune queries that stay fast at production scale - our analytics and reporting surfaces read across millions of student attempt records.

● Build and maintain asynchronous background processing: scheduled jobs, Azure Service Bus queue workers, PDF report generation, OMR scanning and AI content pipelines.

● Write efficient, reusable, testable Python, JavaScript and SQL

● Take production issues personally: debug, root-cause and fix, then close the gap that led to the bug.

How You’ll Lead

● Translate product goals into a technical approach, then into tasks a team of 5 junior engineers can pick up and finish without ambiguity.

● Review the code that goes into the product - for correctness, performance, security and convention adherence - and give feedback that teaches rather than just corrects.

● Mentor junior and mid-level engineers: pair on the hard problems, unblock them early, and grow them into people who need less of your time.

● Set and hold engineering standards - coding conventions, testing, code review, release process and documentation - and make them stick.

● Make architectural calls on schema design, service boundaries and build-vs-buy, and write down the reasoning so the next engineer inherits the decision, not just the code.





● Work directly with the founders, product and business stakeholders to turn a business goal into shippable scope - and to push back when the scope and the timeline disagree.

● Own delivery for your pod: estimates that hold, releases that surprise nobody, and accountability for what you ship.

Who You Are

● 7+ years building and shipping production grade mobile-first web applications, including at least 2 years leading, mentoring or formally reviewing other engineers’ work.

● Strong in Python, with real depth in a modern web framework - FastAPI preferred; solid Django or Flask experience counts if you are ready to move.

● Solid in JavaScript (ES6+) and a modern SPA framework - Vue.js preferred; React or Angular experience counts if you are ready to move.

● Genuine SQL depth: schema design, indexing, execution plans, and the instinct to spot an N+1 before it reaches production.

● Hands-on with an ORM at scale - SQLAlchemy preferred - plus comfort with NoSQL document modelling (MongoDB).

● REST API design you can defend: resource modelling, versioning, status codes, pagination and backward compatibility.

● Cloud experience - Azure (Functions, Blob Storage, Service Bus) preferred; equivalent AWS or GCP depth is fine.

● A track record of raising a team’s standard, not just out-performing it - your code reviews should be something juniors look forward to.

● Clear written communication: you can explain a design decision to an engineer and its business consequence to a founder, in the same week.

● Strong planning, problem solving and organizational skills, along with a demonstrable self-drive and motivation.

● Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering field or equivalent practical experience.

Good To Have

● Production experience building with LLMs - prompt design, structured output, batch/async inference and evaluating output quality.

● Depth in async Python: concurrency, queue-driven architectures and long-running background workers.

● Database migration practice at scale (Alembic or equivalent) against a live, customer-facing database.

● Experience with AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor) inside a disciplined engineering workflow - we use them heavily, with review rigour around them.

● Exposure to document and image processing - OCR, OMR, PDF extraction, LaTeX.

● CI/CD, observability and incident-response ownership.

● EdTech, assessment or learning-analytics domain experience.
