An ETP operator, or Environmental Treatment Plant operator, is responsible for the efficient and secure operation of an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP). Their duties include:

- Collecting samples: Collecting samples of air, surface, and ground water for analysis
- Preparing samples: Preparing samples for shipment to external labs
- Maintaining equipment: Ensuring that ETP equipment is in good condition by following a preventive maintenance schedule
- Operating the plant: Operating the ETP and ensuring it runs within budget
- Troubleshooting: Troubleshooting any issues that arise in the ETP plant
- Handling chemicals: Handling hazardous chemicals and maintaining dosing amounts
- Maintaining records: Keeping records of the ETP, such as log sheets, instruction books, and analysis records
- Ensuring safety: Ensuring that all activities are carried out safely and in compliance with safety systems
- Maintaining housekeeping: Maintaining good housekeeping of the plant
