Network Engineer – SCADA & Industrial Communications

About the Role

Our client is looking for a Network Engineer with hands-on SCADA and industrial communications expertise to design, deploy, commission and maintain the complete OT/IT network infrastructure at a utility-scale solar park.

The role will ensure reliable, low-latency and secure communication between field devices such as inverters, trackers, weather stations, meters, transformers and RMUs and higher-level systems including SCADA, EMS, PPC and plant performance platforms.

The position requires strong understanding of industrial networking, SCADA protocols, OT cybersecurity and utility communication requirements, with exposure to IEC 61850, IEC 62443 and SLDC/RLDC/grid-code integration.

Key Responsibilities

1. OT/IT Network Design & Architecture

- Design, document and maintain the complete OT network architecture covering:
- Process Bus
- Station Bus
- Plant LAN
- Remote SCADA WAN
- Segment OT, IT and corporate networks using VLANs, DMZs and firewalls in line with IEC 62443 and the Purdue Model.
- Standardize IP addressing, device naming and network asset registers across solar blocks, inverter stations and substations.
- Design redundancy using HSR, PRP, RSTP and MRP for ring/star fiber network topologies.

2. SCADA & Industrial Communication

- Commission and maintain field-to-SCADA/EMS communication using:
- Modbus TCP/RTU
- IEC 60870-5-104 for SLDC/RLDC telemetry
- IEC 61850 MMS/GOOSE/SV for substation and relay communication
- DNP3 for utility interfaces




- OPC UA/MQTT for historians and cloud analytics
- Maintain protocol mapping matrices covering signal lists, register maps and IEC 61850 data models.
- Coordinate with inverter, SCADA, RTU, relay and tracker OEMs for communication integration.

3. FAT/SAT & Commissioning

- Validate ICDs, communication configurations and test cases during FAT/SAT.
- Troubleshoot communication issues including:
- Stale SCADA tags
- Register mismatches
- Packet loss
- Communication failures
- Time synchronization drift
- Use tools such as Wireshark, IEDScout and Modbus Poll for diagnostics.

4. Industrial Network Hardware

- Commission and maintain:
- Managed industrial Ethernet switches
- Media converters
- Fiber patch panels
- RS-485 communication networks
- SCB/SMB-level communication infrastructure
- Ensure proper grounding, shielding and surge protection for outdoor communication cabling.

5. Time Synchronization

- Implement and maintain time synchronization using:
- NTP
- SNTP
- PTP / IEEE 1588
- IRIG-B
- Ensure accurate time synchronization for protection, metering and SCADA systems.

6. Network Monitoring & Troubleshooting

- Monitor network health using SNMP-based tools such as PRTG, Zabbix or SolarWinds, along with SCADA diagnostics.
- Respond to network alarms and communication faults within defined SLAs.
- Lead root-cause analysis for communication outages affecting:
- Solar generation




- Plant dispatch
- Grid telemetry
- Commercial metering
- Maintain critical network spares to support plant availability.

7. Documentation & O&M; Support

- Maintain updated as-built network diagrams, cable schedules and port-mapping records.
- Support O&M;, electrical and SCADA teams during:
- Shutdowns
- Network upgrades
- Device replacements
- Firmware upgrades
- Protocol changes
- Grid-code and cybersecurity audits

Required Skills & Experience

- 2–10 years of experience in Industrial/OT Networking, SCADA or Industrial Communications.
- Hands-on experience with industrial Ethernet and SCADA communication networks.
- Strong understanding of Modbus TCP/RTU, IEC 104 and IEC 61850.
- Experience with VLANs, firewalls, DMZs, IP addressing and managed industrial switches.
- Understanding of fiber-optic communication and RS-485 networks.
- Exposure to SCADA, EMS, PPC and plant communication architecture.
- Knowledge of IEC 62443 / OT cybersecurity and Purdue Model is preferred.
- Ability to troubleshoot network and protocol-level communication issues using tools such as Wireshark, IEDScout or Modbus Poll.

Preferred Experience

- Experience commissioning utility-scale solar PV plants of 50 MW or larger.
- Experience with SCADA, PPC and SLDC/RLDC integration.
- Understanding of PPC functions including:
- Active/reactive power setpoints
- Ramp-rate control
- Frequency response
- Voltage control
- Reactive power/Q control
- Experience integrating weather stations, soiling sensors, pyranometers and tracker SCADA.
- Exposure to SNMP monitoring tools such as PRTG, Zabbix or SolarWinds.
- Basic scripting knowledge in Python, PowerShell or Bash for automation and log analysis.
