Tech lead — Spring Boot (Backend) & Azure devops (optional)

About the role:
We are looking for a highly experienced Tech Lead with deep expertise in Spring Boot and Java-based backend systems. This is a hands-on leadership role — you will be expected to write production-quality code, design system architectures, lead a team of engineers, and engage directly with clients to shape technical strategy. You will own the end-to-end technical delivery of one or more product streams.

Key responsibilities:
Technical leadership and architecture
Define and own the solution architecture for backend systems, ensuring scalability, resilience, and maintainability.
Prepare and present Low-Level Design (LLD) documents covering class diagrams, sequence flows, API contracts, and data models.
Drive adoption of design patterns, SOLID principles, and clean code practices across the team.
Evaluate and recommend frameworks, libraries, and cloud-native tools suited to project requirements.

Hands-on engineering
Actively contribute to the codebase — feature development, API design, performance tuning, and bug resolution.
Build and maintain RESTful and event-driven microservices using Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, and related ecosystem tools.
Design and optimise database schemas (SQL and NoSQL) and integration patterns using Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar.
Ensure high code quality through unit testing (JUnit, Mockito), integration testing, and CI/CD pipeline governance.

Code reviews and quality governance

Conduct thorough code reviews, providing actionable, constructive feedback aligned to architecture goals.
Establish and enforce coding standards, branching strategies, and pull request guidelines within the team.
Identify technical debt proactively and work with the team to remediate it in a structured manner.

Client engagement





Serve as the primary technical point of contact for client stakeholders during discovery, design, and delivery phases.
Translate business requirements into technical proposals, effort estimates, and phased delivery plans.
Present architecture decisions, sprint progress, and risk assessments to client leadership teams.
Build trusted relationships with client architects and product owners to influence technical roadmaps.

Team leadership and mentoring

Lead, mentor, and upskill a team of 5–10 backend engineers, fostering a culture of engineering excellence.
Facilitate technical grooming sessions, design reviews, and sprint ceremonies in collaboration with the Scrum Master.
Support hiring by reviewing technical assessments and conducting engineering interviews.
Act as an escalation point for technical blockers, providing guidance and unblocking the team promptly.

Required skills and experience
Core technical
12+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 4 years in a tech lead or senior engineer capacity.
Expert-level proficiency in Java (8/11/17/21) and Spring Boot (2.x / 3.x) — REST APIs, Spring Security, Spring Data JPA.
Strong hands-on experience with microservices architecture, service mesh, API gateway patterns, and distributed systems.
Proficiency with messaging systems: Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, or AWS SQS/SNS.
Database expertise: PostgreSQL / MySQL (query optimisation, indexing) and at least one NoSQL store (MongoDB, Redis, DynamoDB).
Cloud platform experience: AWS (EC2, RDS, Lambda, S3, EKS) or equivalent on Azure / GCP.
CI/CD tooling: Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or Azure DevOps familiarity with SonarQube and artifact management.

Architecture and design

Proven ability to produce solution architecture documents and detailed Low-Level Design (LLD) artefacts.
Solid grasp of architectural patterns: CQRS, Event Sourcing, Saga, Strangler Fig, Circuit Breaker.
Experience with domain-driven design (DDD) and bounded context decomposition.
Familiarity with API specifications: OpenAPI / Swagger,



AsyncAPI, and GraphQL.

Soft skills and client-facing

Demonstrated experience working directly with external clients in an onshore or blended delivery model.
Excellent written and verbal communication — able to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive, ownership-driven mindset.
Ability to manage competing priorities across multiple workstreams and stakeholders simultaneously.
