Technical Writer Intern

We are looking for a Technical Writer Intern who can understand how technology works and turn complex technical concepts into clear, useful, and engaging content.

You’ll work on creating technical blogs and educational content for Selfhost.dev, covering topics around databases, cloud infrastructure, DevOps, deployment, hosting, backend development, developer tools, and related technologies.

This role is ideal for someone who is curious about how things work under the hood and can take a technical concept, understand it properly, and explain it in a way that developers and technical audiences can actually understand and find useful.

What you'll do

- Research and write technical blog posts for the Selfhost.dev website.
- Create content around databases, cloud infrastructure, DevOps, hosting, deployment, backend development, and developer tools.
- Understand technical topics before writing about them rather than simply rewriting information from other sources.
- Research documentation, technical articles, GitHub repositories, developer discussions, and other reliable sources to build accurate content.
- Break down complex technical concepts into clear and structured explanations.
- Write tutorials, how-to guides, technical explainers, comparisons, and educational articles.
- Create practical examples and explain technical workflows where relevant.
- Work with the product and engineering teams to validate technical accuracy.
- Identify interesting technical topics and emerging discussions that could be relevant to Selfhost's audience.
- Continuously improve existing articles based on new information, product changes, and reader needs.
- Help develop and maintain a consistent technical writing style across Selfhost's content.
- Understand the search intent behind technical queries and structure content so it is useful for both readers and search engines.
- Translate complex product and infrastructure concepts into content that communicates their practical value.

- You are genuinely curious about how software, infrastructure, and developer tools work.
- You have a foundational understanding of development, databases, cloud infrastructure, servers, APIs, deployment, and DevOps concepts.
- You don't need to be an expert, but you should be comfortable learning technical concepts independently.
- You can read technical documentation and understand the concepts well enough to explain them in your own words.
- You enjoy going down technical rabbit holes and figuring out why something works the way it does.
- You can explain a technical concept clearly without unnecessarily complicating it.
- You have strong written communication and can structure information logically.
- You care about technical accuracy and are comfortable verifying information before publishing it.
- You can distinguish between understanding a concept and simply copying information from a source.
- You are comfortable asking technical questions when something isn't clear.
- You can work independently and take ownership of an article from research to final draft.
- You are interested in developer tools, SaaS, cloud, databases, infrastructure, or the broader technology ecosystem.

Skills we are looking for

- Foundational understanding of software development, infrastructure, databases, cloud, and deployment concepts
- Ability to explain technical concepts clearly, accurately, and logically
- Ability to research documentation, technical sources, and developer discussions
- Ability to simplify complex concepts without losing important technical details
- Understanding of APIs, backend systems, servers, applications, and deployment workflows




- Familiarity with concepts such as cloud infrastructure, networking, containers, hosting, and monitoring
- Basic understanding of databases and concepts such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, queries, backups, scaling, and database management
- Ability to organize technical information into clear sections, examples, and logical flows
- Ability to verify technical claims, terminology, examples, and documentation

Nice to have

- Experience writing technical blogs, tutorials, documentation, or developer-focused content.
- Familiarity with PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, ClickHouse, or other databases.
- Familiarity with AWS or other cloud platforms.
- Basic understanding of Docker, containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD, Git, or Linux.
- Experience using GitHub or reading technical repositories.
- Experience building or deploying a small application or backend.
- Familiarity with developer communities such as Reddit, Hacker News, Stack Overflow, or GitHub Discussions.
- Basic understanding of technical SEO and content structure.
- A technical background through a degree, coursework, personal projects, or self-learning.
