Senior Legal Counsel - Mumbai, India

Assurant is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Counsel to serve as a trusted legal advisor to business leadership, providing strategic legal guidance across commercial contracts, insurance operations, regulatory compliance, litigation management, corporate governance, employment matters, risk management, and business growth initiatives. The role will work closely with cross-functional stakeholders and external counsel to ensure legal compliance while enabling business objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Commercial Contracts & Business Advisory

- Draft, review, negotiate, and manage a wide range of commercial agreements, including distribution agreements, service agreements, technology contracts, vendor agreements, NDAs, and strategic partnership contracts.
- Advise stakeholders on contractual obligations, legal risks, and mitigation strategies.
- Support contract execution, renewals, amendments, and risk assessment activities.
- Partner with business teams to structure commercial arrangements aligned with legal and regulatory requirements.

Regulatory, Compliance & Insurance Advisory

- Provide legal advice on insurance, corporate, data privacy, consumer protection, and other regulatory matters.
- Interpret and implement regulatory requirements, including interaction with regulators where required.
- Support regulatory filings, compliance projects, audits, inspections, and governance initiatives.
- Advise business leaders on insurance products, claims matters, policy interpretation, and legal implications of new business initiatives.
- Litigation, Arbitration & Dispute Resolution
- Manage litigation, arbitration, customer disputes, regulatory proceedings, and claims-related matters.
- Coordinate with and manage external counsel, including legal strategy, budgets, and case management.
- Review legal notices,



responses, and dispute-related communications.

Corporate Governance & Legal Operations

- Support corporate governance, legal documentation, record management, and policy framework reviews.
- Establish and maintain legal processes, templates, repositories, and governance controls.
- Provide legal support for strategic projects, partnerships, acquisitions, and other corporate initiatives.

Stakeholder Management

- Act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and business teams across Operations, Claims, Risk, Compliance, HR, Finance, and Commercial functions.
- Engage with regulators, industry bodies, external legal counsel, and other key stakeholders.
- Mentor junior legal team members and contribute to the development of the legal function.

Required Experience

- 12-15 years of post-qualification legal experience.
- Significant experience within Insurance, Reinsurance, Financial Services, BFSI, Insurtech, or other regulated service industries.
- Strong background in commercial contracts, legal advisory, corporate governance, and regulatory compliance.
- Experience handling insurance products, distribution arrangements, claims, and regulatory matters.
- Prior in-house legal experience preferred.

Skills & Knowledge

- Solid knowledge of Indian Insurance Laws, IRDAI Regulations, IFSC/IFSCA Regulations, Corporate Law, Contract Law, Employment Law, and related regulatory frameworks.
- Expertise in contract drafting, negotiation, and risk assessment.
- Experience managing litigation, arbitration, and dispute resolution matters.
- Strong business partnering, stakeholder management, and influencing skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to provide practical, business-focused legal advice.

Education

- LL.B. from a recognized university (Mandatory).
- LL.M. or equivalent postgraduate qualification preferred.
- Qualified to practice law in India
