JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Purpose of the role To establish, implement, monitor, and continuously improve Plant Hygiene, GMP, Sanitation, Personal Hygiene, and Good Manufacturing Practices across the manufacturing facility, ensuring that employees, processes, premises, equipment, utilities, and external service providers consistently meet applicable GMP, food/product safety, regulatory, and company requirements.
The Plant Hygienist will act as the Sanitary Supervisor / Hygiene SME and work cross-functionally with Production, Engineering, QC, Warehouse, EHS, HR, Procurement, and external vendors.
Primary Responsibilities
1. Plant GMP & Hygiene Management
- Develop, implement, and maintain the Plant Hygiene and GMP program.
- Conduct routine GMP and hygiene inspections across all,
- Manufacturing areas
- Packing areas
- Raw material and finished-goods warehouses
- Personnel movement areas
- Utility areas
- Change rooms and washrooms
- Canteen and welfare areas
- Monitor compliance with GMP, housekeeping, sanitation, zoning, material/personnel flow and hygiene requirements.
- Identify hygiene gaps and ensure timely CAPA closure.
- Maintain hygiene standards during normal production, maintenance, shutdown and start-up activities.
- Drive continuous improvement of plant hygiene standards.
1. Personal Hygiene Management
- Establish and monitor Personal Hygiene Practices (PHP) for employees, contractors and visitors.
- Monitor:
- Hand hygiene
- Protective clothing/PPE
- Hair and beard control
- Jewellery and personal belongings
- Illness/injury reporting
- Personal cleanliness
- Behavior inside manufacturing areas.
- Conduct routine personal hygiene observations and provide immediate coaching/correction.
- Coordinate periodic personal hygiene training and competency assessment.
1. Training & Quality Culture
- Develop and conduct training on:
- GMP
- Personal Hygiene
- Cleaning & Sanitation
- Contamination Control
- Behavioral Observation on Quality
- Quality Culture
- Conduct induction training for current employees, contractors and relevant visitors.
- Evaluate training effectiveness.
- Develop visual hygiene awareness programs and campaigns.
- Promote Quality is everyone's responsibility culture.
1. Continuous Improvement
- Establish hygiene-related KPIs and trends.
- Identify recurring GMP/hygiene issues through data analysis.
- Implement improvement projects using PDCA / CAPA / risk-based approaches.
- Benchmark hygiene practices against industry standards.
- Introduce digital inspection and hygiene monitoring systems where feasible.
- Reduce recurring GMP observations and hygiene-related deviations.
1. Support environmental monitoring programs in coordination with QC Microbiology.
2. Participate in hygiene-related risk assessments and HACCP/food safety studies, where applicable.
3. Coordinate/participate in Quality Owners Meetings with Production, Warehouse, Engineering, QC, QA and other functions. Drive cross-functional action plans. Follow up on overdue actions and effectiveness.
4. Support/lead hygiene-related vendor and service-provider audits. Ex. Laundry, External Warehouse.
5. Support and/or lead plant hygiene requirements during internal, Regulatory, Certification and other relevant audits.
6. Maintain and review the GMP Audit Records, Personal hygiene audit records, BOQ Records in Appropriate Log Sheet and/or Digital platform.

Verify cleaning effectiveness through visual inspection and appropriate monitoring methods.
8. Evaluate new cleaning methods, chemicals, equipment and technologies.
9. Participate as a hygiene SME in quality investigations. Investigate GMP deviations, Hygiene Failures, Cleaning Failures, Pest incidents, foreign body Incidents, Personal hygiene violations. Monitor CAPA implementation and effectiveness. Identify systemic issues rather than focusing only on individual errors.
10. Support implementation of food/product safety controls along with Food safety team. Allergen Contamination, Glass policy implementation, review and verification.
11. Participate in the Change control meeting and provide the recommendations in line with hygiene requirements.
12. Authority & Accountability
The Plant Hygienist should have authority to:
- Stop or escalate an activity when an immediate hygiene/product-safety risk is identified.
- Request correction of GMP/personal hygiene non-compliance.
- Escalate repeated GMP violations to functional heads.
- Recommend area/equipment cleaning or sanitation before release.
- Recommend temporary restriction of personnel/area access when hygiene requirements are not met.
- Raise deviations and initiate hygiene-related investigations.
- Recommend CAPA based on identified systemic risks.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS: Education : M.Sc. Microbiology/ Biotechnology/ Food Technology /
