Role & responsibilities A surgical nurse specializes in perioperative care, providing care to patients before, during and after surgery. Pre-operative, the nurse must help to prepare the patient and operating room for the surgery

Maintain compliance with the rules and regulations of SRMC ,NABH standards recommendation for the department

- Receiving the sterile trays and E.O sterilized items from CSSD for the posted cases.
- Check the functioning of all equipments.
- Initiate and complete Team Time Out procedure with all eight parameters (1st& 2rd).
- Circulating nurse should help the scrub nurse by giving all the sterile packs and instruments in time.
- Helping the technician for positioning the patient.
- Applying of earth pad correctly to prevent cautery burns.
- After taking counts it is written in the board and in the patient case sheet.
- Should ensure the accountability to follow the protocol for sponge, gauze needle etc.
- Awareness about the condition of the patient and stages of surgery.
- Should remain inside the OR throughout the surgery and should keep the floor dry and clean at all times.
- Manages the operating room and provide safety and health needs of the patient by monitoring activities of members of the surgical team and check the conditions in operating room.
- If blood is transfused in OR it should be documented and reported to the PACU nurse at the time of handing over.
- In between the surgeries the circulating nurse has to communicate with the reception staff to call for the subsequent cases after co-ordinating with the operating surgeon and anesthetist and get the things ready for the next case.
- After finishing the surgery,



the circulating nurse should complete all the documentation in the case sheet and should hand over the patient to PACU with all records and reports
- Supervising the house keeping workers in between the cases at the time of cleaning the OR as per the policy.
- Labeling specimens correctly and should hand over them to the specimen sending nurse.
- Documenting all the details correctly in the operating registers and imprest stock note.
- Should follow barrier nursing protocol for extra care patients.
- Returning balance medicine to the pharmacy and to hand over the credit bill and return bill to the PACU staff .
- Maintain consumption record for all the cases.
- Communicating with the ward secretary about the patient details.
- Prepare DC for getting the items used for emergency cases from the pharmacy.
- OR nurse should communicate to the PACU incharge 30 minutes before shifting the patient from OR to PACU.
- Dispose the biomedical waste according to the prescribed norms.
- If implants/grafts are used for the case, it should be documented and informed to the stores (consignment) with patient details for charging.
- To be aware of ICU protocols, blood transfusion protocol and IUD protocols.
- Protected shifting protocol to be followed
- If in case of critical value, it should be properly documented and critical value protocol to be followed.

Others

- Be a part in quality improvement activities
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the HOD
- Perform any other task and duties appropriate to his /her realm of knowledge ,skill and experience as required by the department

Preferred candidate profile Qualification : B.Sc Nursing

Experience : 02 - 06 Years in OT Department
